Corry City Council met in a hurried session to buy the old Corry High School property for 15000 dollars for a city parking lot. Councilman Grice and Weber objected to the rushed process amid Right To Know concerns and frequent 24 hour notice issues similar to a recent Titusville case.
Corry officials at a regular meeting pushed four more provisions of the teacher proposed salary schedule to the Joint Committee. Bolan Louis W. Miller District delegates to District 65 are Theodore A. Faust Lewis A. Barton Ralph E. Britten Lawrence S. Lobdell John J. Bolan Louis W. Miller Alternates Edward A. Nelson Ronald E. Scalise.
The Corry Area Joint School Committee approved three new hires for the next term to address looming vacancies. Max Bennink, Mrs. John Rozelle, and Miss Carol Stultz will join the junior senior high science and social studies and primary teaching pools with starting salaries of 4000 and 4200 dollars. The superintendent warned of four to five vacancies by September and outlined reassignment plans at Columbus Wright Conelway and Concord schools.
General Thomas J. White told a National Press Club audience that the United States is much stronger than the Soviet Union in military power and may have a slight edge in war missiles. He warned there is no certain way to know for sure which country leads in missile strength. White also said the Strategic Air Command can destroy the war making capacity of any aggressive nation and achieve victory.
A Corry lighting fire leveled the Thompson Maple brush handle plant on Shady Avenue, owned by Raymond Morris of Spartansburg. The blaze destroyed heavy equipment and stock, with 1200 gallons per minute and 2800 feet of hose used as firefighters battled the flames. Local CAIDC offered aid to restart operations, with Morris stating partial insurance coverage and no firm plans yet for the future.
Castro rejects a U S protest over seizure of American property in Cuba and says it will speed up agrarian reform. He orders complaints to Cuban courts while the State Department cites lack of inventories receipts and court orders in many seizures. Marcelo Fernandez accuses the U S of ignoring Cuba’s basic situation and vows a formal reply. In Los Angeles AP report the white cocktail dress worn by Barbara Jean Finch during the night of July 11 is shown in court. Two bullet holes and nine back wounds are described by Capt. William M Ryan as evidence while Dr Bernard Finch faces charges in a murder case.
The 92 year old senator Theodore Francis Green will not seek re election next November citing failing eyesight and hearing. The veteran lawmaker and oldest person to serve in Congress plans to retire after completing his current term.
Mrs Angelo Giacoma reported a burglary on South Center Street yesterday while she was at work. An unknown person forced the inner door, entered the apartment, and took a white model radio while leaving the front door unlocked earlier in the day. Police planned to question her further as she checked for missing items and mended the inner door.
FBI agents captured fugitive Robert Garfield Brown at a Salvation Army home in Cincinnati Ohio where he worked. Brown, 41, a noted fugitive, faced charges of fleeing Maine to avoid prosecution for a shooting in Old Orchard Beach. The arrest followed a tense confrontation with agents at the shelter.
The American Cancer Society unit in Corry announced a 2500 dollar fund appeal to support research and public education. A noon meeting at Hotel Carty set dates April 6 to 9 for the drive with Ina Austin named treasurer and A B Tate to head appeals among business and professional leaders.
A jewel thief pistol whipped a jeweler in Pittsburgh s uptown, escaping with about 9000 dollars in rings and watches. Police report Francesco Mastrovincenzo was knocked down. 150 dollars from his wallet and a cash drawer were taken as the robber fled in a waiting auto after grabbing 30 fungs and 6 watches from three showcases.
Police report two girls aged about 30 living nearby died after stepping onto thin ice and plunging into three feet of water in a partly filled swimming pool. Rhonda Vosel recently moved into the neighborhood and was identified as one of the victims.
