Ballad singer Jimmie Davis won the Louisiana Democratic runoff for governor, pledging peace and harmony while proposing a state sovereignty commission to preserve segregation. He led with 485,095 votes to Morrison’s 414,258, delivering a sweeping victory for the Davis ticket and signaling the end of the Long era.
The first deep-water season of the St Lawrence Seaway yielded record import and export totals but fell short of anticipations with 20,103,67 tons through the 15 mile canal span between Montreal and Lake Ontario. Port cities report delays from canal bottlenecks and equipment shortages as 459 ports from Milwaukee to Cleveland log 1958 to 1959 comparisons. Vice President Richard M Nixon moved toward the 1968 campaign by consenting to have his name and delegate slates entered in three primaries New Hampshire Ohio and Oregon. Governors and party leaders weighed in praising his candidacy while others warned against perceived political deception and emphasized religion and missile test issues.
A 10 car New York Central passenger train derailed near Wellington, Ohio, injuring 50 plus and killing at least four. The St Louis to Cleveland Southwest Limited, carrying about 155 passengers, plowed into a freight detour, with a diesel fire and wreckage spreading fumes. Officials cite possible brake failure and speed near 80 mph before derailment at the Nickle Plate crossing. Coroner lists identified victims including Phil Lehman and George Rummel, with an unidentified woman among the dead.
Mrs. Addie Mae Hardy, 39, of Meadville, died after a fire in her two story home. She reportedly slept in an overstuffed chair near the front door which ignited, sparking flames through the living room. Firefighters responded at 3:30 am, finding her body beside the chair. The house sustained limited damage. she had been out Saturday night and returned around 1 am. Her estranged husband from Cleveland arrived later.
Chicago Sun-Times veteran reporter Frank Smith died yesterday likely of a heart attack. A 25 year veteran, he began at the paper and served as a World War II war correspondent.
A Pittsfield boy William B Perrin age 18 was killed Saturday night after being struck by a National Dairy milk truck on Route 6 east of Pittsfield. The driver Chester R Mason of Erie 42 pulled out to pass a car and struck Perrin who rode sans lights. He died at Warren General Hospital from multiple fractures. He was en route to Youngsville from Pittsfield with parents and siblings listed. Funeral arrangements set for Youngsville with Rev Donald St Glory officiating at 2 p.m. interment Pine Grove Cemetery.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Arne Alpert announced a halt on seizing pinball machines after the State Supreme Court ruled they were gambling devices. The court stayed destruction pending appeals, cautioning that illegal machines cannot be played but can’t be destroyed yet. No seizures have occurred since January, pending higher court action.
Dan Worthman of Erie won the Northwestern area model train race final, defeating Corry girl Cheryl Migliaccio after her train jumped the track during the last runoff. The event drew 42 entrants, including five girls, with competitors from Jamestown Warren and Shenango, and featured two Erie trophies and a traveling cup.
Two out of town cars sustained $1,800 damage and band instruments in one vehicle were damaged when the vehicles collided yesterday afternoon at East Columbus avenue and Sciote street in heavy rain and fog. No one was hurt. William E. Hagenlocher of Erie said the Chicago car turned in front of him. Douglas Smith Jr. of Chicago said he tried to turn to Selota street to avoid the collision. Hagenlocher’s car was in the westbound lane. Smith’s car sustained about $1,000 damage. The Bob Diddley Dance Band’s instruments in Smith’s car were damaged.
Philadelphia AP reports assistant medical examiner doubts two core details in Elmo Smith confession about slaying 16 year old Maryann Mitchell of Bridgeport. Pathologist says death occurred almost immediately after beating and that the victim was likely not struck until morning. questions time of murder and condition. Smith confessed after arraignment and plea, awaiting grand jury action.
AP dispatch from Wellington recounts frightened survivors of a Sunday night train wreck. Ann Morrison of Denison Texas described women in her car freezing rather than shouting as they sought escape from flames. Margaret Brown of Lyndhurst Cleveland led her two boys from a twisted coach after a screeching crash. Charles H Taylor of Bellefontaine Ohio, an NY Central engineer, guided women and children to safety despite danger, his wife recalling the tense, unforgettable scene.
