In Montgomery County Pa on Dec 22 a State Parole Board officer reported no signs of abnormality in Elmo Smith the man who later confessed to raping and murdering 16 year old Maryam Mitchell. Psychiatric reports from 1954 and 1956 noted sexual tendencies but authorities withheld psychiatrist names. Smith of Bridgeport pleaded guilty to the Dec 28 crime and was jailed awaiting grand jury action after a partial denial. Continued on Page Eight.
Phear Lay-cew'ge Winfield Graig, 46, of Harrisville, pleaded not guilty to a fatal shooting charge. The case, tied to the December 24 death of Clarence Ellsworth Johnnell Nellis, was bound over to Butler County Sessions. The hearing included testimony from state police and officials, while Craig denied the shooting and claimed a prior confession was coerced. He commented on not wanting the incident labeled a revenge killing and objected to earlier newspaper reports.

Pittsburgh AP says a 35 year old Mount Washington office clerk robbed the German Savings and Loan in Mount Washington during lunch. He fled with about 7258 dollars as four women tellers were held up. A teller saw currency fall to the ground and police arrested him at a roadblock 18 minutes later. all stolen money was recovered.
Civil Air Patrol launches a five state air search for Don ald M. Fennell 39 of Indiana Pennsylvania missing after a 6 45 am takeoff from Indiana bound for Lake Wales Florida and expected to land in Elkins West Virginia CAP reports 21 planes plus 40 ground vehicles and 218 personnel will comb West Virginia Virginia Pennsylvania North Carolina and South Carolina in hopes of locating the 1946 pilot.
County officials approved a broad pay raise plan conflicting with Corry's salary ordinance for 1960. The moves affect most county employees with a 180 dollar yearly minimum, retroactive to January 1, and require a three way city school district county funding split for certain posts. The Erie County Infirmary staff get a time served plan with raises from 20 to 300 dollars. Affected are county offices and the prison payroll, while 13 veterans on Social Security do not receive increases. Ernest M Flinn, longtime IRS district director for Missouri, died of a heart attack in St Louis.

Arthur D. Gardiner, 42, a religious philosopher and prominent scholar, died yesterday in Tucson. Gardiner was known nationwide and his family founded the town of Gardiner in Maine.
