Scranton Budget Seen as Window Dressing by GOP

In Harrisburg the 1964 85 budget of 1.168 billion drew praise from Republicans as presidential timber while Democrats blasted it as window dressing and a stage production. Scranton touted growth without new taxes, with a 24 million surplus and 14.5 million deficit cut, but critics linked the surplus to last year tax hikes and urged restraint. Legislative work paused after the address as hearings set for January and the Farm Show loomed, filling Harrisburg’s hotels and motels.
