City considers rate hike and legal review for utility

Weber said councilmen would be informed of a 14 percent rate increase effective February 28 and an additional 16 percent per 1 000 cubic feet starting in April. The company links the first to a gross receipts tax and the second to higher wholesale prices. A full city reexamination of the company's finances, valuation, expenses and depreciation could be required, potentially costing $20 000 to $25 000 for engineering and witnesses, which may not be justified given recent rate structure reviews.
