Spring Training Opens Across Major Leagues
Spring training camps begin in California, Florida, and Arizona as major league clubs prepare for the 1953 season. Giants, Cardinals, Pirates, and Cubs lead the early prep, with most players aiming to steady form before exhibitions start in March and the regular season in April. Many hopefuls will return to minors. top performers will emerge as the season nears. Ivy League presidents propose an eight point plan to de-emphasize football and major sports, including banning practice espionage and tighter post season limits, potentially pushing college sports toward amateur status if adopted widely. Local high school basketball highlights include Sparta’s win and Sharon’s upset as district scoring records are set, plus notes on beaver pelts and trappers' prices.
