Washington Feb 19 The University of Chicago was named as one of three major investors in a war surplus ship deal now under Senate investigation. The arrangement reportedly yielded 2.5 million dollars profit on funds of 101,000, with questions about legality and tax avoidance. William Lerce testified the university invested 15,000 and held 20 percent in two firms that led the transaction.
Coast Guard crews on February 19 reported 33 survivors on the stern section of the tanker Fort Mercer and no life signs on the Pendleton bow off Cape Cod. Seven from both crews were dead or missing, with 32 seamen rescued from the Fort Mercer stern during a flare-lit operation as the ships broke apart in the storm. Capt.
