In Montevideo, Uruguay, a country with broad welfare programs and a 50-year retirement, the peso's decline exposes fiscal strains. Government controls extend to gambling, oil, banking, and transport, while wages lag. Uruguayan life centers on beaches, imported cars, and plentiful food as the state seeks new revenue.
Seventeen year old Jo Ann Williams of Wattsburg won the 1960 national cherry pie baking title in Chicago over 49 rivals, earning a trip to New York and Washington plus prizes. She plans to attend Mansfield State College and credited her home economics teacher. Meanwhile a heavy winter storm crippled parts of Pennsylvania, closing the Turnpike from Irwin to Carlisle, with up to 18 inches of snow in western counties and multiple traffic jams.

In Dixon Ohio a bus carrying 30 grade school children home from a basketball game was rear ended by a semitrailer. Fifteen children were injured. In Cincinnati an airplane crashed within 50 feet of a Catholic school near Madeira in eastern Hamilton County and caught fire.
YMCA enrollment drive reports 122 members signed so far, two days into the effort. R Elwin Fuller chairs the breakfast session with Rev Paul Bauer giving the invocation. New and renewal members total 122, 34 percent of the drive’s goal, with 17 new and 15 renewals reported this morning.
The body of a 2-year-old patient at Warren State Hospital in North Warren was found in Conewango Creek near the hospital about 4 30 p m yesterday. Donald Alan Jones, son of Mr and Mrs A Wayne Jones of Franklin, had been missing since February 9 when he slipped away from a hospital movie. Two boys Kim Reynolds 12 and Chip Clemens 13 found the body while checking traps along the creek. Coroner Ed Lowrey said he is investigating and expects a death certificate this morning.
Harrisburg AP reports statewide school audits reveal infractions from petty to serious. Auditor General Charles G. Smith notes board secretary fraud, improper expense claims, and misused state funds. Corry Area High School hosts a five member audit team gathering findings as officials prepare corrective actions.
Corry police and state investigators search for Evelyn Jane Burkett a 16 year old Corry Area High School student who left yesterday morning after excused from class and has not been seen. Authorities suspect possible contact with a 20 year old Clymer man. description released to teletype network if not found. Evelyn is blue eyed blonde five feet six and a half inches tall about 120 pounds. she wore a tan sweater green skirt and black shoes.
Charleroi police chief Rome Ross, a veteran of many years, died at age 78 after a heart attack and crash incident in a police cruiser yesterday. The tragedy occurred in Charleroi Pennsylvania during an on duty incident.
San Quentin California AP reports Daryl Chessman received an eighth stay of execution just before his scheduled gas chamber date. Gov. Edmund G Brown granted a 60 day reprieve after both state supreme court and the governor declined to intervene. Chessman’s attorney said the condemned kidnapper remarked to his lawyer that he felt like a dead man.
Corry resident Kolstee of Spring Street was arrested by state police for involvement in the July 6, 1958 Waterford Drive-in holdup. He pled guilty at arraignment before Justice of the Peace Floyd Marsh and released on a $500 bond. Accomplice Eugene Pier is on a 23 month probation, with a $260 fine and court costs already paid.
Queen Elizabeth II gives birth to a son at 3:30 p.m. local time, the first new prince headline in 103 years. Both mother and infant are reported as doing well, with doctors John Peel Sir John Weir and Lord Evans signing the official bulletin.
In Montevideo, communists and anti American groups planned to exploit the execution of Charles Chessman to inflame protests against President Eisenhower during his visit. Uruguay’s next president Benito Nardone and top officials praised the postponement of Chessman’s execution, with Nardone taking office shortly before the revived tensions.
SAN FRANCISCO AP Daryl Chessman condemned to death for a sex crime received a 60 day stay from execution less than ten hours before his scheduled death. Gov Edmund G Brown ordered the reprieve after a State Department telegram warned that executing Chessman could trigger hostile demonstrations in Uruguay and Brazil during President Eisenhower’s South American visit. Brown said he would ask the state legislature to consider abolition of the death penalty. The stay followed long public appeals and Chessman’s notoriety as a symbol in the capital punishment debate. He was moved from the gas chamber waiting room back to the death row cell after the stay was issued. No one would be allowed to visit him for at least a week. The telegram cited concerns from Uruguay’s government about possible demonstrations.
A strong storm hit Corry bringing 3 to 5 inches of snow and freezing rain. Winds up to 50 mph caused icy roads and power outages while rail service ran about an hour late. Forecasts warn of continued poor conditions with low temperatures and high winds over the weekend.
