Washington AP Senator Everett M Dirksen Republican leader says Democrats have criticized the defense program too harshly. Deputy Chief Romolo Zangrando ordered an orderly exit as flames ripped through a window and a wall crack appeared. The upper floors collapsed soon after with injuries including a leg loss for Fireman William Jackson and back and hip injuries for Romolo Yangrandy. The two million dollar blaze is blamed on a short circuit.
Union City VFW officials announced plans to purchase the former Superior Dry Cleaning building on East High Street from Glare Capwell of Corr. They will remodel the two story building adding space for social and business quarters on the ground floor and post headquarters on the second floor. No move date is given.
City outlines building specs on the former high school lot drafted by Solicitor Roger Brown. Bids open February 28 at 7 p m with a special session to review terms. Requirements call for at least 16 000 square feet brick faced construction begun within 12 months of deed and removal costs borne by the bidder if needed.

Ezra Taft Benson, the secretary of agriculture, unveiled a proposed farm bill aimed at sharply cutting price supports and removing production controls on wheat to address surplus. The plan targets 1961–63 grower price supports around 75 percent of the three‑year average, roughly $1.40 per bushel in 1961, while parity rules would trend to 4 percent post‑1963. Benson backed a tobacco measure and urged Congress to limit tobacco supports to protect foreign markets.
