J Donald Watson a mathematics teacher at the Junior High School was named to the newly created position of assistant to the principal by the Coury Area Joint Committee. The unanimous vote follows a special committee interview of five local candidates as the district prepares to replace retiring Howard J Sheen. The duties begin July 1 with salary set at the next committee meeting.
A Salamanca division report from the Erie Railroad discussed a near collision at the Shady avenue crossing involving a Columbus School bus. The division superintendent said a one minute delay by the bus driver could have allowed a 60 mile per hour train to pass. The letter cited an Interstate Commerce Commission case of a stalled bus costing children’s lives. The Corry Area Joint School Committee left the matter with the Columbus School Board and sought copies of the railroad letters for the bus board.
The Rev. Leo K. Bishop 48, vice president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, was shot and seriously wounded by a gang of teen robbers on Chicago’s South Side. He and his wife Pauline 47 resisted an attempted robbery as a car load of seven youths approached. two riflemen in the gang fired, striking Bishop in the groin and grazing his back during a four hour surgery. Police reported the gang of five boys and two girls, all Negroes, terrorized several districts and may have also fired at an electrical engineer and robbed a doctor and wife of $15. Bishop’s condition was listed as fair after surgery at Illinois Central Hospital.
A 62 year old Harrisburg man appeared for a hearing under Tioga County grand jury action on manslaughter charges after an auto wreck along U S Route 15 near Tioga killed four Mansfield State College students and injured two others and himself. Merrill C Perry a Grove City College student was released from Blossburg State Hospital and said he might have fallen asleep before the crash. James G Fox Athens was seriously injured and moved from Blossburg to Parker Hospital Sayre.
The Corry School Board met in a routine session at the high school as Dr Archie Tate questioned the fate of the club tax case dating to 1955. About $2000 in dues, based on a $1 per member charge, remains due to the schools though the state legislature has ruled the tax illegal. The district dropped the tax in 1954 55, and Attorney Frank McKnight said the matter is set for Erie County civil court scheduling.
Secretary of State Christian Herter voiced doubt about avoiding a new Berlin showdown with the Soviet Union. He predicted Khrushchev would confront the West with an ultimatum at the Paris summer conference and may push toward a summit to resolve the dispute. He warned of a tougher Soviet foreign policy and noted Soviet space achievements boosting their world prestige.

ATLANTA AP A Baptist deacon William Columbus Johnson 33 says he planted a hazardous device in minister J T Robinsons car to eliminate the preacher and wife lovers. Johnson and Velma Robinson discussed using a church annex for trysts. Subpoenas to the Robinsons and a grand jury were issued. Johnson is jailed on a 35000 bond after the device was found in the preacher s car.
In Corry area 400 people signed for jobless benefits over the past 30 to 60 days as James Roseberry notes. Unemployment claims for the month total 1,606, a touch below December and 40 percent under the year-ago month, with area employers optimistic about seasonal resumption boosting employment. January saw 125 new applications, 94 men and 31 women, while active applications stood at 736. Openings carried over from the prior month numbered 16 and eight placements occurred across clerical, sales, semi skilled, and service roles. Unemployment compensation activities reached 215, plus 92 reopened claims, and 121 decisions were made in January with 108 compensated.
Four youths from Corry area pled guilty to burglary and larceny in a Riceville Corners hardware store theft. Names include Gordon J Bailey 19 Corry RD 1 Kenyer 1 Doolittle 19 Townville and Raymond Li Sehteffler 20 Townville. Two others, Roy Li Heese 17 Spartansburg and Daniel Cox 17 Centeryne Theatre, await plans. All loot recovered by troopers, including a missing Wil Ster radio found after owner notified.
Indian tour schedule for Nikita Khrushchev begins Thursday with no reason given for declining an invitation to shoot Siberian waterfowl. The India Soviet premier will visit cultural sites and meet local officials as part of the state visit.

A Eastbound school bus on Route 6 stalled when its motor died at 8:30 AM. William Sturdevant, 47, drove the bus and was rear ended by William Downing Jr., 89, of Erie, causing minor damage and transferring the pupils to a second bus. No injuries reported. bus damage about 75 dollars.
Anion Layman Chauncey Thomas, 28, of East High steel, was arraigned before Alderman M. S. Cobbett on December 16 for theft of a power saw from Howard Davis, RD 4 Union City. State Police arrested him Saturday for stealing two power saws. he pled not guilty and was bound over for trial at Cenerville court while awaiting further action.
Erie high schools will shift to seven periods next fall as the school board upheld a December ruling. Students will be dismissed at 9:55 p.m. for the extra period, with no expansion of teaching hours or new teachers. Dr. John M. Hickey said staffing won’t rise. only lighting and heat costs grow.
President Eisenhower will fly to Cape Canaveral, Florida, tomorrow for a four hour inspection of the missile launching base. The White House announced he will spend about that time on site before returning to Washington by jet. Press secretary Hagerty said he will not witness any initial firings during his brief stay.
