At Lowry Air Force Base a plane crashed during final approach. Firefighters and responders worked the scene as debris damaged an unoccupied house roof and a wheel lodged in another roof. Mrs. Anna Marie Schoen, a 41 year old maid in the house, was in the basement and suffered two small cuts.

Mansfield State College mourns four students killed when a car crashed into a parked trailer on State Route 15 near Mansfield. Merrill C. Perry of Harrisburg faces manslaughter charges after the sedan skidded on the shoulder, striking the trailer loaded with steel. One passenger, James G. Fox of Athens, is in serious condition with internal injuries. two others are in fair and good condition.
The House Legislative Oversight subcommittee begins payola hearings with four Cleveland men summoned to testify. Former KYW jockeys Joseph Finan and Wesley Hopkins, former KYW librarian Charles Young, and James Shipley of a Cleveland record distributor are named. The panel criticizes payola and urges criminal penalties for undisclosed payments in broadcasting.
Edgar Allen, 65, bound for six days in his Moor home, was found by William Terry after Gene Shaw’s restaurant patron missed him. The victim, once 100 pounds, weighed about 80, and had cardiopulmonary risks but survived with treatment at Good Samaritan Hospital. Police recovered $1.07 and Allen’s late wife’s rings. doctors warned time nearly up if not found.

Corry State Police report a weekend traffic spell produced injuries to two people and damage to ten vehicles totaling about 1775 dollars. Incidents include a collision on Route 277 near Spartansburg injuring no one, a Mercyhurst student driver off Route 8 injuring two nuns, and a Randolph man skidding off Route 277 causing roughly fifty dollars in damage. Fire at Union City disturber Saturday morning caused damage estimated at $15,000 to three retail establishments. Initial check suggested wiring in the Volunteers of America basement ignited mattresses and clothing. Fire spread mainly through the basement, damaging Pete’s Lunch and Tay Joy’s Jewelry, near National Bank. Corry Tremen aided with engine and smoke tank. cause not yet determined.
An 11 ounce infant died about 28 hours after birth at Des Moines. The child was born to Mr. and Mrs Morris C Vermuelen of Des Moines at 1122 PM Saturday night. The pediatrician at Sum Oateopathic Hospital said the child began breathing briefly after birth and was well formed though three months premature. The mother, mother of three other children, was reported doing well. The American Medical Assn. listed a 12 ounce girl who died in Chicago 54 hours after birth last year and Jacqueline Benson, 22, of Palatine, DI, who weighed 42 ounces at birth, as prior smallest babies.
Kennedy aides sought to keep California delegates neutral by offering terms to stay out of the California primary. Brown’s position remained unclear as California Democrats weighed loyalty to Brown against Kennedy’s bid. Kennedy said he would decide on entering the California primary within a month, with filing due by May.
Daryl Chessman faced denial of a stay of execution set for February 19 in the San Quentin gas chamber. Judge Richard Chambers refused to issue a certificate of probable cause for appeal, blocking a full-court hearing to overturn Judge Goodman's habeas writ denial. Chessman plans another appeal to the Supreme Court and may seek clemency from Governor Edmund G. Brown if unsuccessful.
