Hartford City Indiana principal Leonard Redden 44 fatally shot Harriet Robson 52 and Minnie McFerren 62 in a fifth grade classroom before shooting himself in a wooded area. His wife Havel Redden believed gossip fueled his break with reality. Redden had planned psychiatry and had supervised Hartford City's three grade schools and church Sunday School.
The Senate cleared a three in one constitutional proposal that bars poll taxes and adds provisions allowing governors to fill House vacancies after a disaster and granting DC residents presidential vote and House delegation. The measure passed 70 to 18 and can be acted on separately by the House and states.
Tracy's hardware store in Riceville Corners was burglarized Sunday morning with guns and ammunition taken but the radio was recovered yesterday before the owner realized it was missing. Six area men admitted taking the radio during police interrogation. Gordon Bailey and Kenneth Doolittle were released on bond. Bailey on $2,000 property bond and Doolittle on $800 cash bond.
Seven crew members escaped a burning 87 foot fishing vessel near New Bedford about 50 miles off the coast. The vessel the Star of the Sea from Boston was owned and captained by Kevin Cleary of Dorchester.
Miner Greene, a self employed logger and father of two, was crushed by a falling tree while cutting timber on the Clymer Wattsburg road. He remains in critical condition at Hamet Hospital in Erie after transfers and X rays.
A panel truck carrying six people collided with a car driven by Bettis Petro in Nineveh Indiana. The truck rolled over and burned killing Edith Rogers 33 Sherrey Gall Leonard 2 Donna Marie 1 and Linda Laverne 4 months. Francis H Rogers 41 survived with third degree burns.
A federal grand jury indicted two men Oleg Holsclaw and George W S Vascovich for escaping from a front line prison at Moundsville West Virginia and forcing a taxi driver to take them to Uniontown Pennsylvania They allegedly abducted Lloyd Stern 34 of Moundville West Virginia last month Uniontown police caught the pair who are already serving ten and multi year terms for armed robbery and related crimes
Twenty three families petitioned Columbus school officials to retain Frank Bares si as a bus driver after an Erie Railroad engineer alleged he drove in front of a speeding morning passenger train near the Shady avenue crossing. The Columbus school board previously voted unanimously to remove him.
Paris AP reports France expected to grant De Gaulle quick approval for a one year decree power to govern Algeria and curb extremists. The National Assembly approved the broad measure 449 to 79 with De Gaulle needing ratification by April 1 1961. If Senate changes occur another assembly session possible.
Thomas Bowers 17 of Indian Head was shot and killed while halting in a wooded area near Mi Run Fayette County. Roy Ritenour 18, also of Indian Head, said the rifle discharged accidentally during fox hunting as they stood by a fire. Ritenour grabbed the rifle but a movement caused the gun to fire. The incident was reported to State Police.
Harrisburg AP reports Gov. Lawrence unveils a two class penalty schedule for highway offenses effective March 2. Class A covers more serious infractions with penalties from warnings to one year suspension, while Class B offers milder penalties including warnings and up to three months for initial offenses. Nine violations in a year trigger an extra one year suspension regardless of class.
Harrisburg AP Gov Lawrence unveils a three year plan to suspend licenses for speeding offenses with tiered penalties across first to sixth offenses. The program exempts zones posted under 50 mph and preserves the 50 mph threshold exceptions for speeding in slower zones.
Joe Shellnut turned himself in admitting he robbed a bank in Bellflower California. Bank teller James Johnson, who had discussed robbery with Shellnut, was arrested at Shellnut's home. Shellnut claims conscience drove him to return the four thousand dollars by mail before surrendering.
A 35 year old woman, Jane Harrison, was trapped 43 minutes in a wrecked car after a runaway ride Tuesday night. Firefighters and bystanders freed her as gasoline leaked from the tank posing a hazard. Alma Dean Stroud and Ruby Stroud were traveling with her. all three were hospitalized after the crash.
President Eisenhower praised U S missile development as gratifying. He rejected an around the clock bomber alert and supported Gates Jr Twining against Pow er over airborne alert and the threat of Soviet missile disruption to retaliatory forces.
Pennsylvania plans mandatory physical exams for drivers to identify unsafe motorists. Health Secretary Dr. Charles L. Wilbur listed disqualifying defects including loss of use of both hands nerve disorders insufficient vision heart disease mental illness epilepsy uncontrolled diabetes chronic alcoholism narcotic addiction.
Three Corry residents fall through thin ice at Mead Park pond while skating. Craig Bailey, 8, slips into unsafe ice. bystander Jack Downey and Ross Bultey rush to help. Both men fall in waist-deep but rescue Bailey and escape unharmed.
John Van Pelt, 25, of Columbiana Ohio, died after his truck crashed into a tractor-trailer operated by Clarence W. Cox 24 of Bulger Washington County. Van Pelt burned to death as flames engulfed the cab about 10 miles northwest of Beaver Falls.
Dr Bernard Pinch testifies about the night his wife Barbara Jean Pinch was shot dead outside their Nome home on July 18. The defense contends the shooting may have been accidental or in Bell defense as Carole Tregatti’s sworn testimony is excluded, though two earlier police statements by Carole may be admitted.
