South Vietnam’s new strongman Maj. Gen. Nguyen Khanh urged Western support in the fight against communism. Merle William Smith 37 of Spring Creek died when two jacks slipped under a 1955 junk car behind Daniels Garage and the vehicle fell crushing his skull. He borrowed a hydraulic jack and used a bumper jack, the frame shifted, and the car toppled onto him. Smith, born July 28 1926, leaves wife Jeannine Resink and two children Marilyn and Merle. Funeral is Monday at Youngsville with burial at Berea Lutheran Cemetery.

Three area residents were admitted to Corry Memorial Hospital after an auto crash near Spartansburg. George Sherlock twenty five Nevin Teed junior twenty five and Thomas McGinnett twenty one suffered facial lacerations a fractured nose a dislocated thumb and a possible ruptured spleen. Sherlock and Teed were treated at Corry and Teed transferred to Hamot Hospital in Erie for further care. The third victim Metinnett had a scalp laceration and is in shock. State Police have limited details as investigations continue after another crash diverted officers.
G Mennen Williams, the U S assistant secretary of state for African affairs, said in Toronto last night that independence, a better living standard, and non guidance are the three main desires in Africa. The remarks highlighted U S interest in supporting African self rule and development.

Union City man Larry Brown, 21, was arrested after trying to sell a stolen tachometer to a State Trooper. Brown pled guilty to theft in Union City and was jailed awaiting court action. He had allegedly stolen the tachometer and a pop rivet gun from Molded Fiber Glass Beat Co.
A local campaign named Pin Pals invites youths to donate 63 cents for a membership pin to support The Overcomers, the city’s handicapped club. Nine new Pin Pals joined nine others who sent 65 cents, including the Baressi children Sammy Thor Vickie Barbara and Dottie, plus Bradley Scott Fox Douglas Marlowe and Sue and Jackie Michael. A Corry grand jury indicted three Corry men and two from Union City on charges from false pretenses to malicious mischief. True bills named John J. Sank 22 Corry for malicious mischief after climbing a refrigerator and breaking a window on December 21. Also charged were Charles G. Huffman 539 Column Avenue with sodomy, George Hartley for cheating by fraudulent check, and Floyd Bailey from Union City for corrupting morals of a minor. Robert Wondworth of Union City faced a morals offense charge.
Three members of the Eio County Medical Society urged county commissioners to maintain the current medical personnel and management at the Fairview hospital. Dr. William C. Kinsey Dr. John F. Hartman and Dr. Joseph M. Faso stressed care in any staff changes and offered to assist with replacements if needed. Commissioner Fret Lamberton noted long collaboration with the society since 1957 and that their suggestions are considered.
Illinois Revenue Director Harry Holman reports a drop of over 500000 in state cigarette taxes for the first three months of 1964. Collections as of January 30 totaled just under 35 million, down from over 40 million for the same period a year earlier, amid reported smoking and related economic effects.
