Mrs Lena M ONeill of 1201 North Center street died yesterday at Corry Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was 78, born July 25 1884 in Ellington NC and lived in Corry 30 years. Surviving sons are Merrill Hunt and Stanley Hunt, siblings, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Requiem Mass at St Thomas Church Wednesday 930 am with interment Holy Cross Cemetery Jamestown. Rosary at funeral home Tuesday evening.
Walter Labinski, 43, was killed by two shotgun blasts Saturday night as he climbed toward his son Walter Labinski Jr., 16, who faced arraignment today on charges of slaying his father according to state police.
A three car crash near Indiana City killed Elmer R. Grable of Richmond and injured six others including Curtis Johnson of Warren Pennsylvania who was in good condition with a fractured left arm. Grable's wife Ruby and two Grable children were among the injured along with Jerry Lamb Alfred Peters Charles Smith Joseph Ferriell and Brenda Lam. State Police said Smith's car skidded into Grable's path and a third car rammed into them.
Charles W. Torrey's funeral was conducted yesterday at H. Richard Hays Funeral Home Spartansburg with Rev W A Robbie officiating. He read hymns Abide With Me Golden Crown Some Golden Daybreak. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery Union City with pallbearers Richard Jackson Elmer Stover David Rose and Gordon Bralick.
A million dollar fire that destroyed the stands at Wheeling Downs Raceway delayed the winter multi-winner horse races and prompted track president James F Edwards to announce a cancelation and consider transferring the meeting to Waterford Park. The blaze damaged the administration building and occurred last Friday involving Smith and Johnson as passengers.
The Associated Press reports the national traffic death toll surpassed 300 in the Christmas weekend days, far under safety experts pre holiday projections of 650 to 750. Howard Pyle of the National Safety Council cautions if trends hold, this could be the safest Christmas on record with a final toll near 304 deaths so far.
The report cites 37 additional deaths and an overall total of 385 from holiday accidents. It notes the Christmas period had lower fatalities than last year by 100, with weather likely reducing highway travel and increasing careful driving. Hazardous driving persists in parts of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. The record holiday toll remains 706 in 1956.
