The scene centers on Port Everglades and Miami as relatives depart Cuba for U.S. resettlement.
Corry State Police report a 4 Corry resident and La verne Waldron 50 of Waterford escaped serious injuries after Waldron attempting to overtake collided with Charles Waterhouse 65 of 415 Grand Street. Waldron side swiped Waterhouse and rolled over, both drivers treated and released. Vehicle damage totaled 650 to Waldron and 400 to Waterhouse. Possible charges pending.
City snow removal crews scraped two parked cars Monday morning amid the week’s snow relief efforts. A 4 grader driven by Sylvester Krupa on Prospect Street damaged Melvin Blynt’s car, estimated at 4 dollars. Fifteen minutes later on West Trying Street a city plow driven by Earl Van Guilder scraped a car owned by Tri Nord Motors. no damage estimate listed.
The United States and NATO pressed Japan to halt exporting steel pipes to the Soviet Union for use in Russia oil projects. Kyodo News Service quoted government sources saying Tokyo was urged to cooperate with NATO’s decision. Officials declined to comment.
A $200,000 fire swept Laceyville Wyoming County destroying a supermarket jewelry store and a pharmacy and firemen's hall. The blaze, believed started in the firemen's hall, damaged the fire company truck and tanker left stuck in the hall garage.
In Corry and nearby areas the Salvation Army, led by Capt. John Edeen, distributed 110 gift baskets from 8 am to 3:30 pm. About 1,000 toys were donated, with 800 handed out to families at the Citadel toy store and visitable gifts for each child. Volunteers also collected 1,200 cans of food from local schools. Erie police chief says there will be no letup in the murder probe of Mrs. Eleanor Pree 39 with about 66 suspects questioned since discovery of her strangling December 10. In Palo Alto California a physician used a steak knife to open the 23 month old boy Orian Merler's chest and massage the heart after the infant stopped breathing for nearly six minutes at home. The procedure continued in an ambulance and included a chest incision closure and a tracheal tube. Parents Ezio and Mrs Merler reported the child appeared normal after church services earlier that day.
A wind swept blaze struck the Clyde rVolk farm on Ravelin Hill road early today trapping six cows in a barn that burned despite 30 Clymer volunteers and three pieces of equipment. Volk escaped injury, but 13 of 19 cattle were saved as hay loss mounted and the blaze was investigated.

Milwaukee broke an 83 year date record at -14, Madison hit -22 the lowest in 78 years, and Minneapolis St. Paul recorded -20. Readings extended from the western mountains to the Great Lakes with snow in the Great Lakes region and Ohio River area, while Atlanta faced dense fog and ice delays. Continuous power and communication outages were reported in parts of Georgia and surrounding states.
Police pursue clues in a Christmas Eve hijack of a Brinks armored truck carrying about $100,000. Snow hindered the scene as footprints, tire tracks, a chauffeur clip, and a police badge left by three pistol wielding hooded robbers were examined. the driver was overpowered and the loot taken to a waiting car.
Senator Harry F Byrd Democrat from Virginia was reported in satisfactory condition at Union Memorial Hospital. He entered the hospital last week as hospital spokesmen and doctors refused to disclose the nature of his ailment. Byrd is 70.

SAIGON AP Sergeant Roque Matagalay of Richmond California says captors forced him to sign four statements during five months in Communist captivity. He reports four months of propaganda lectures and malaria illness led to signing. He later refused further signing after recovery, saying the documents attacked Diem regime and U.S. policy.
A Navy petty officer and his mother were found dead in his off-base trailer near Belleville, Pennsylvania, Christmas Day. Police suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after the doors remained closed and no footprints appeared in the snow.
