Ready To Prosecute 1949 Erie Slaying
Erie County District Attorney Robert Chase says he is ready to prosecute Charles Hartwell for the 1949 slayings of Sgt Leo Waldinger and patrolman Walter May in Erie. Hartwell’s trial, delayed by mental health rulings, is expected to begin in February after officials at Warren State Hospital release him. Hartwell, then in state custody, would have been freed under newer laws. Chase notes the case follows old mental health statutes.

Area Without Bridge Faces Worsening Travel Crisis
Residents stranded on the east side of the Enterprise Tidioute bridge face escalating peril as packed snow and slush flood roads. A long detour adds at least 12 miles one way to Titusville, with brakes failing in slushy conditions. A grader was sent to clear drainage as PennDOT maintains a districtwide clearing schedule but storms recently left some routes impassable for hours.
