A heavy rainstorm drenched the city turning streets into torrents and flooding basements. Faith Church on West Washington street extension suffered the worst beating while fog elsewhere forced drivers to slow down. no highway crashes were reported.
A warm trend and heavy rainfall unleashed floods across Erie and Crawford counties. Roads flooded, basements filled, and Harborcreek High School closed as French Creek rose toward flood levels. Emergency crews responded to 900 to 1,000 sewer calls amid widespread damage.
Rain and melting snow pushed western Pennsylvania creeks over banks flooding secondary roads and buildings. Water bodies were not expected to crest until today. Flooding spread from Lawrence, Beaver, and Butler counties east to Clarion and toward the New York border. French Creek near Meadville stood nine feet above normal and was due to crest Thursday. Schools closed in one Cleveland suburb as the unusual February floods continued. Hastlake mayor Morris Becker lamented repeated flooding this year.
State Senator Henry J. Cianfrani resigned effective at the close of today’s session two weeks before his racketeering bribery and tax evasion trial. He cited a need to devote time to his defense and the diminished effectiveness of his office.
In Los Angeles a witness at a Hollywood library may have seen the Hillside Strangler suspect. The 17 year old Kimberly Diane Martin was found dead near downtown, linking the killer to the 11th victim. Police describe a mustachioed man with a limp as a possible suspect.
Corry school board authorized D A Johnson and Associates to investigate malfunctioning panic switches at the vo tech building and seek cost reduction from Baker Electric. Superintendent Charles Krepps notes the work may run about 4600 dollars and negotiates a lower price before the next meeting.
In Harrisburg the House approved five million dollars in spending cuts and a budget stability bill by a 179 to 13 vote. The measure completes a three part package to resolve a months long budget stalemate. Senate action and future tax changes remain. Governor Shapp aims to sign the package soon.
City and Airport Authority members declare no liability for a recent crash near the strip. Pilot David Crawford from Warren Ohio was unable to land after pulling up. airport manager Frank Lucie notes strip closure due to weather and plowing limits. Crawford transferred from Corry Memorial Hospital with injuries described as more serious than initial diagnosis.
With rising costs, General Telephone says the federal excise tax on local and long distance service drops four percent effective January 1. This marks the fifth annual reduction of a World War II temporary tax, which will end January 1, 1982. The Pennsylvania operation estimates 1978 savings for its customers around $1 million.
City Administrator Robert Grice reports at yesterday's bid opening for the new community center that portable staging bid by Wengar Inc of Owatonna Minnesota for 2205 dollars appears satisfactory after review, while no bids were received for folding tables and chairs prompting possible rebid or alternative purchase, with some items to be bought on an informal quote basis, potentially delaying the project.
