Residents along York Street report a prolonged siege of mud from a torn sewer project. Cars must be parked blocks away sometimes at a hospital, with thefts of parts and flat tires among the issues. Access is limited. emergency vehicles would struggle in a winter-long problem.
Santa Claus and the city’s new bandstand will arrive together tomorrow at 12:30 PM in the city park. The bandstand, a project of the Corry Arts Council, has been funded entirely by donations. The Bandstand Committee urges local donations of new funds to complete remaining bills of about $3,000 and plans a spring dedication with a full contributor list.
Fire at Manila’s National Mental Hospital Pavilion 2 killed 32 inmates and injured six others. Officials say building designed for 400 housed over 1,200, with rescue efforts hampered by smoke and darkness. Patients refused evacuation, some apathic or combative, as police and staff worked to recover those trapped.
State police charged a 17 year old from Oil Creek Township with a one man crime spree that included stealing and damaging five vehicles and wrecking a municipal building. The suspect was stopped at 1 pm after driving multiple stolen vehicles and pulling items from glove compartments. Police say all township vehicles and property were recovered and damage to three township vehicles ran to several thousand dollars.
Cleveland officers staged a blue flu slowdown over contract talks with about 80 percent of the force calling in sick. Despite the walkout, all cruisers remained on patrol in two-person units, with cadets and supervisors filling gaps and 12 hour shifts for those who reported. Mayor Dennis Kucinich threatened suspension for noncompliance and noted proposed raises to 16,000 for patrols.
Washington AP The General Accounting Office criticizes the Consumer Product Safety Commission for wasting 157 million over four years with minimal impact on reducing injuries. The GAO notes average 834 days to develop first three standards, far above the 340 day requirement, covering swimming pool slides architectural glass and matchbooks.

HARRISBURG AP The Public Utility Commission approved a 38 million dollar rate increase for Bell of Pennsylvania while preserving 10 cent calls. The decision rejected about 100 million in proposed hikes and kept calls to pay telephones at a dime. The ruling, 3-1, came after over a year of debate and while Bell urged higher charges for basic rates installation and 411 information calls. Consumer advocate Mark Widoff hailed it as a public victory, and commissioner Robert Bloom supported the final figure to close the case. Commissioner Michael Johnson dissented, citing misleading information and excessive revenue needs.
The Union City Dam faces heightened pressure from French Creek flooding as it drains into Meadville and surrounding towns. Emergency crews prepare evacuation centers in Meadville and other communities while the dam’s spillway releases water, prompting officials to caution and monitor crest levels through Friday.
