A state trooper was killed and a suspect shot dead in a gun battle in Altoona Pennsylvania. Police hunted two more men, with ten schools closed on the north side and roadblocks set on major routes out of town. The dead trooper was Corporal John S Valent, killed while transporting three men to the Lewistown state police barracks for questioning.
