A rural fire near Corry, involving Corry Clymer and Columbus crews, gutted the H. T. Ayers residence early today. About 50 firefighters battled the blaze in freezing 20 degree weather. four elderly residents survived in bathrobes as Red Cross aid arrived. The house, located five miles from Corry, was likely a total loss with clothing and furnishings destroyed.
Titusville officials dispute claims of being the largest per person budget in northwestern Pennsylvania. Mayor C M Sonne says Titusville’s per capita figure reflects long standing practice and compares with 1958 data for 11 nearby cities. He notes 1961 per person spending is only 80 cents higher than 1958, while several peers rose more. Continued on Page Four.
S A Long manager of the Chamber of Commerce announced that about 55 groups were invited to place displays in the city park. Lights would be extended to operate until Monday to create an impressive exhibit before Santa Claus arrives at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Cornty downtown and then in the park where local youngsters gather for gifts. Deadline for setup is Monday.
U S Representative and senator elect Keith Thomson age 41 from Wyn was found dead yesterday at a friend's home. Thomson had won a U S Senate seat in the November election after serving in Congress. He was first elected to Congress earlier in his career.
An 11 year old boy in Corry died from a gunshot wound sustained in the family living room. The weapon, a shotgun, was reportedly fired accidentally by his stepbrother as relatives and authorities investigated. The boy, Charles Huff, was born in December and rushed to Corry Memorial Hospital but succumbed shortly after arrival. Funeral plans are being arranged by Bracken Funeral Home.
A powerful midwinter blizzard blamed for multiple deaths battered a vast swath of the Southwest from El Paso to Colorado, isolating towns, knocking out power, and severing communications. Ham radio operators relayed critical condition reports as temperatures plunged and travel deteriorated with ice covered northern roads and snow totals piling up across the region.
Bradford Ap Three Bradford News Co employees were injured when a van exploded after a man entering the unit with a lit cigarette ignited fumes from a газheater. Union officials seek a National Labor Relations Board hearing to determine if enough of the Covey Point Products Co plant workers in West Marysfield favor unionizing. An NLRB examiner will decide if an election should be ordered, with about 34 workers employed at the three month old local plant and eligibility affecting the vote. Pay ranges noted from 51.0 to 220 per hour for various roles.
A Pittsburgh man reportedly collected money strewn near a church after a rainstorm yesterday. He allegedly gathered a mix of bills totaling about $1,620, including $20 notes, while officers investigated several business places and the church, with no arrests reported.
Talon plant workers under a new contract start next month. Local 501 International Lady Garmen Workers Union members will work until earning 5,000 dollars, then others on furlough fill in until year end. Official returns show President elect Kennedy carried Pennsylvania and its 2 percent electoral votes by a margin of 110 336 votes. The statewide tally credits Kennedy with 2 566 282 votes to 2 429 950 for Nixon. Evie Hass 7 186 votes for Socialist Labor, Farrell Dobbs 2 678 for Workers Party, and 440 other votes scattered.
A 17 year old Corry High School sophomore, John J. Miczek, is accused of running a large coin and gold selling operation that swindled buyers across the nation. He traveled coast to coast selling and writing bad checks, with investigations spanning Corry to St Louis and multiple midwestern coin shows. Police plan a hearing in St Louis on December 22, while his mother faces questioning for identification purposes. The case involves thousands of dollars in alleged fraud and a purported gold collection marketed under alias Buell and Son.
Rioters massed in Algiers and Oran as 5 000 to 10 000 demonstrators opposed De Gaulles Algeria visit.
