William Helmintoller was named Corry Area School District board president after three ballots at the annual reorganizational meeting. James Bennett’s withdrawal cleared the way for the decisive vote. Joel Alsdorf became vice president. Margaret Morrow and Roger Lansberry remain secretary and treasurer. New directors Martie Nadolny, William Donaldson and others were sworn in. The meeting focused on background business and adult classes at the vo tech site, with Krepps and Salerno outlining options including charging a fee and matching Erie County policies.
Jose Osorio, a 43 year old welder, describes a deadly attack in a North Side Chicago alley. Two youths grabbed his car keys, stole $90, abducted him, and shot him, severing optic nerves. Hector Torres, 19, and a 15 year old were arrested and charged with armed robbery and attempted murder.
Four Corry women were treated for minor injuries after a two vehicle crash on Route 505 about a mile south of Erie yesterday morning. Roxanne Ross of Corry drove the car that crossed the center line and sideswiped an oncoming truck driven by Robert Staszewski of McKean. Passengers Sarah Hansen, Lucille Hansen, and Teresa Kiel, all of Corry, were taken to St Vincent Health Center and released after treatment. The incident occurred around 11 15 yesterday morning.
Rev. Irvin Lindemuth, 58, pastor of Columbus Community United Church of Christ, was struck by a car while helping driver Fred J. Kaver, 67, in Corry. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and is in satisfactory condition at Corry Memorial Hospital.
In last night's meeting the council bought a new 1978 police cruiser after bids favored Buesink Ford at 4400 with trade. They approved a turnstile for the new community center to help offset costs and discussed possible entrance fees. City Engineer David Johnson offered a 1000 reduction in his 9000 retainer for fewer duties, with no action taken yet. Parking enforcement concerns near Park Place were raised, with plans to tow illegally parked cars and assign foot patrols. York Street sewer work was described as near completion, with reopening and road repairs planned once weather cooperates. Salaries talks resumed with the first reading of a continued item.
The 1977 Corry Area United Fund reports gifts and pledges totaling about 93,700, roughly 86 percent of the 108,000 goal, with officials not yet declaring a final total. Despite late campaign timing, organizers expect over 94,000 but no funds have funded the appreciation dinner, set for Tuesday January 10 at the Corrian Hotel.
A winter storm dumped up to 15 inches in Bradford and caused traffic deaths in the Allentown area. Two teenaged boys died when their car skidded off an icy road near Bethlehem. Snow totals ranged from five inches in eastern counties to nine inches in Mansfield and widespread slick roads prompted road crews to work to keep arteries clear.
