The Mississippi Valley weather system threatened Appalachia with floods while rain and light snow spread across the eastern nation. Flash flood watches and warnings were issued from western North Carolina to eastern Kentucky and northern West Virginia. Thunderstorms affected areas from Alabama to the mid Atlantic, with light snow in the upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes. Dense fog shrouded eastern Minnesota and southern Indiana. Morning temps ranged from 11 degrees at Laramie to 79 at Miami.
Smethport reports a dramatic back season opener as Norbert Miller, 35, of Russellton, became lost in a frigid Indian Run woods while hunting. A 55 member search, aided by state police and volunteers, found him after dawn near a road, noting he slept with a bear shadowing him overnight. Miller was unharmed but failed to bag a buck. Separately, Neil McCasserty, 28, of Upper Darby, was hospitalized after a fall from a tree near Dolly Brook road in Two Mile, Port Allegany, with knee injuries and possible concussion. He was listed in satisfactory condition.
