Semi Siege Follows Prison Hammer Death
In Florence Arizona visitors are barred and cell doors shut after a semi siege at Arizona State Prison. Waymond Small a 32 year old inmate serving life for the hammer death of an elderly Phoenix woman was beaten with a hammer and stabbed in a license plate factory where about 60 inmates worked. Small died en route to the prison hospital. He was the seventh inmate killed in attacks this year amid gang involvement at the facility. The warden said no suspect had been jailed yet.

AP reports a state investigation into welfare fraud found 537 employees improperly received public assistance. Of 1,418 cases reviewed, most showed no violation or a technical error. Names were not released. funds may be recovered and prosecutions pursued. Overpayments totaled 79,128. The report to Gov. Shapp followed months of inquiry.
