Railroads seek freight rate hikes to meet truck competition

Railroad proposals from Wisconsin lines including Antigo to Chicago outline a broad set of rate increases across categories. Cattle, sheep, hogs would rise about 10 percent, iron ore up 16 cents per gross ton, crude petroleum up 1 cent per 100 pounds, and milk transport up 1 percent per 100 pounds. Coal and coke rates would climb in multiple steps, lake cargo rates up 20 cents per ton, with adjustments split between eastern and western carriers. The plan aims to offset truck competition and preserve revenue on lake and rail routes inland.
