Resignations were requested from several Republican members of the State Council of Education as Governor Barla, reported by Harrisburg advices, seeks to reshape the board. Loveland of Carry retires. others named include Kleman Philadelphia, Ketler Grove City, Young Towanda, King Philadelphia, with Mevllean and Baticks named to fill vacancies.
Democratic county chairmen from all 67 counties gathered in Harrisburg for a closed session with the Democratic state committee executive board. State Chairman David L. Lawrence led the meeting as optimistic reports cited rising Democratic registration, notably in Pittsburgh and western counties, amid a general New Deal trend ahead of the presidential election.

In Erie, two WPA workers were killed in a late night collision. The deceased are John H Kem 63 and Samuel Thomas 62, both of Erie. Several others were injured, including Michael Strilee 21 Joseph Miller 58 and William Sheridan 50, while the driver Reitlinger 24 escaped with minor injuries. The wreck occurred as the WPA crew returned from the Presque Isle project. An inquest was pending.
President Roosevelt travels aboard the Dustbowl Special en route to the northwest for drought relief talks with governors and officials. The 3 day 3000 mile tour covers the Dakotas Minnesota Iowa Nebraska Kansas Oklahoma and Missouri with conferences at Sioux Falls Des Moines Springfield and Indianapolis and frequent stops for damage surveys and local consultations.
Mrs Barton Smith reports her cousin Mrs Elizabeth Sheppard 95, a Brookville housekeeper, was shot to death by her farmer employer Frederick Herriman 62 in Beaver township Jefferson county. Herriman killed himself after firing three bullets. Son Pred Arthurs witnessed his mother’s death and escaped when the weapon jammed. Authorities rule murder and suicide in the tragedy.
Washington state department officials call reports that President Roosevelt plans a major heads of state peace conference utterly fantastic. They say the president is deeply concerned about international affairs and desires world peace but has no thought of calling such a conference.
Stalin warns Soviet public via radio that enemies are getting into position as Red forces maneuver near the front. A separate dispatch from Harbin reports clashes on Manchukuo border with Japanese forces, and a Soviet patrol reportedly driven back after engagement.
Moscow reports an aviation disaster in Asiatic Russia where eleven people were killed and several injured when a plane crashed into the Nigel river region. Officials said pilots and passengers included regional officials, with pilot Sulanov seriously hurt and the plane owned by the Great Northern Sea House Administration.
Early returns from yesterday's South state primary show Sen. Pat Harrison leading over former Gov. Martin S. Conner in a fierce race for the Democratic senate nomination. Senator Byrnes maintains a commanding lead over two anti New Deal challengers with about eleven times their tally. Continued on page three.
A 50 mile gale battered Stoneboro Pennsylvania causing widespread damage. Trees toppled, barns wrecked, and telegraph lines down. Electric service gradually restored after eighteen hours. a box car was blown metres and the fair grounds suffered heavy damage.
Attorney Jack Blackmore of Miia addressed Corry Rotary at the Hotel Corry on Scientific Crime Detecto tions. He highlighted ultraviolet rays fingerprinting and the lie detector in nabbing criminals as fifteen members and three guests attended and Charles Drake joined the club.
Harrisburg August 26 Attorney General Margiotti holds that three members of the legislature may not be appointed assistant county superintendent of schools The ruling follows a request from Public Instruction Superintendent Lester K Ade and rests on the view that the office is civil and forbidden to legislators under the state constitution
The Department of Commerce announced that July exports fell to 178.924 million dollars while imports rose to 193.409 million, producing a trade deficit of 11.085 million dollars for the month in the United States.
United Press reports Britain and Egypt sign a treaty of friendship and a path to independence within a decade. British naval base rights at Alexandria, expanded air forces, and fortification of strategic roads tie to Egyptian nationalism, with Egyptian aid to build its army and possible League of Nations sponsorship. The British garrison shifts to the Suez Canal zone and troops move on the installment plan.
