Labor Leaders Move to Attack Nixon Wage Freeze in Court

AFL-CIO leaders George Meany and United Auto Workers chief Leonard Woodcock plan a joint campaign against the Nixon wage price freeze in Congress, the courts, and on picket lines while government actions ease mortgage rates. About 100 AFL-CIO lawyers will study legal bases to challenge the policy and possible contract wrikes as the unions push to protect wage gains and fringe benefits.

Enrollment set for Corry Area schools on opening day

About 3,720 students are to attend Corry Area School District’s six elementary and two secondary centers on Tuesday August 31. 420 will study at Spartansburg, Sparta offers kindergarten for the first time with 24 pupils. The district launches a continuous progress reading program at Concord and Sparta kindergartens and first grade. A new elementary science curriculum and a flexible high school mini course program aim to tailor student paths, with drug education emphasized. All staff attend pre opening meetings August 30.

Corry Chamber Manager Loaned to Union City for Six Months

The Corry Chamber of Commerce will loan its manager Dennis Frushone to the Union City chamber for six months on a consulting basis. He will work about 16 hours weekly to organize committees and divisions for the new group, which has roughly 50 members. The move was approved by the Corry chamber board yesterday. A second item notes a garage fire at 962 East Main Street caused $190 damage after a bird nest ignited by a cigarette filter. 15 Stanford Hose volunteers and two engines aided.

Begin Initial Moves On 1971 UF Drive

Officials of the 1971 United Fund met with fund-raising firm Coogan Associates to lay groundwork for the fall campaign. Corry Area United Fund will appoint a campaign chairman S. E. Anderson and select division chairmen. Meetings with UF agencies will occur in September to set allocations and a goal, with Anderson optimistic about meeting the target despite last year’s shortfall. Anderson has led drives for the Red Cross YMCA and Salvation Army and serves in local education and planning roles.

Former Officers In Court Today In Corry IGA burglary case

Two former Corry police officers face court in Erie County this afternoon as the burglary case against Richard Farley and Warren Reynolds proceeds. A suppression of evidence hearing will be held to challenge certain items, followed by grand jury appearance to decide if the charge proceeds to trial. Attorneys Scarpitti and Juliante represent Farley and Reynolds respectively, with James Dailey handling the commonwealth role.
