The Pentagon under Nixon ordered a 50 percent increase in Project Transition to train about 75,000 undereducated servicemen for civilian jobs after discharge. Training spans counseling, education, vocational help, and job placement in centers in the United States and overseas. Volunteers may be discharged up to 60 days early for training or stay up to 60 days beyond discharge. The program aims to aid those with less than a high school education and combat or other specialized roles.
Oscar Daugherty, 47, of Corry, was reported missing Sunday after not returning from berry picking behind Charles Hildum’s home. State Trooper John Dumbleton and volunteers from Corry, Spartansburg, Elgin, and Beaverdam, plus a tracking dog and a Franklin helicopter, searched the area before dusk and found him alive in Franklin while visiting friends.
Police report says Raymond Tripp, 73, of Garland, and Larry Bensink, 17, of Corry, collided at East Main and Avenue A as Bensink failed to yield. Tripp was treated for a knee contusion and released. Bensink cited for failure to yield.
Corry area officials report that under Nixon’s 90 day wage freeze administrators will receive new pay raises while classroom teachers keep last year’s salaries. State and federal guidelines determine that raises after the freeze do not apply to teachers while administrators with year round contracts gain the higher rate. Vocational agriculture teachers on year round contracts will retain the pay base, but most teachers lose their negotiated increases for the 90 day period.
The contract to construct a State Police substation on Route 6 bypass has been signed by Frank Hilton. It requires two more signatures from State Treasurer Grace Sloan and Governor Milton Shapp before construction can proceed. W W Hammond Jr. expects occupancy by March after delays, with Rep. Forest Hopkins present for the signing and forwarding to the remaining signers.

Leaders urge study before votes on budget tax and unemployment changes with Wednesday timing eyed for action. Committee revisions include 4.5 million in medical aid cuts led by a 2.3 million slice from Hershey Medical.

Centerville resident Leon D. Post, 55, died after a two car collision on Route 8 one mile south of Centerville at 10:45 p.m. He attempted a left turn into his driveway and pulled into the path of Joseph Lucas of Titusville. Lucas sustained minor injuries and was treated and released. both vehicles valued about $2,500.
The F W Woolworth Co will close its North Center street variety store on December 24 after many years of service. The company regrets the decision and cites no immediate plans for the site, noting the closure is a necessary step.
