Washington AP The State Department closed its building to the public for the first time to improve security after a task force recommendation. A 250000 plan funds 78 guards to man all entrances in Foggy Bottom near the Potomac, with access by approved credentials only.
Edward Bernd, 20, Harvard student from Upper Darby Pa, fell about 4000 feet during a descent from a 12 240 foot peak near Mt McKinley Alaska. The July 20 accident involved Bernd and teammate Dave Roberts as other climbers watched. Bernd's snap link opened triggering the fatal slide.
Three local men were hurt when a car crashed at West Main and Second, totaling the vehicle and damaging two school buses. William Rooney, 22, and Steve Bystricki, 45, suffered cuts and bruises, treated and released. John Pless, 26, driver of the car, was held for disorderly conduct after refusing alcohol tests. Police said Pless fled and later claimed he needed to call for an ambulance while the buses were owned by George Hartley with repairs pegged at 150 and 500 dollars respectively. Madera California officials suspect a six foot long anaconda named Andy is roaming the city sewer system after disappearing from the Floyd Feaver home. The snake was last seen in a bathtub and may return to civilization through a resident’s toilet according to public works.
A 4n year-old Bear Lake girl is in fair condition at Corry Memorial Hospital after being struck by a car near her home yesterday. Basil Skinner Jr., 37, of Bear Lake RD 1, reported the incident. state police say the driver notified authorities and witnesses placed the girl walking with others along the highway. She received treatment for multiple bruises and possible internal injuries while police continue the investigation.
John French, 21, of 300 Delaware Street pled guilty to three counts of burglary in Erie County court before Judge Samuel Y. Rossiter. October 25 was set for sentencing. Miles, 26, of Spring Creek, was fined 250 and given 23 months in jail with parole after discovery his license was suspended during a July 10 crash on West Main Street. William Apthorn, 20, of Corry, charged with drunken driving after losing control on West Smith Street May 8, did not appear for court.
AP report from Pennsylvania shows Pvt. Dennis Floyd 22 of Parma Mo and Pvt. Paul Elson 20 of St Clair Mo killed when a station wagon plowed into marching troops on a military reservation. Thirty soldiers injured in the accident on Thursday night.

Three Erie men were treated at Corry Memorial Hospital after a one car crash near Peek n Peak Ski Lodge in the Findley Lake area. Daniel Wrableski 18 Robert Judino 19 and Robert Godzura 18 suffered head scalp and facial injuries and knee bruises. Wrableski and Godzura were later admitted to Hamot Hospital in Erie in satisfactory condition. The sheriff's office has not received full information on the accident. The car left the road and struck a tree according to witnesses.
