The Justice Department launches enforcement of the voting rights act, filing poll tax suits in Mississippi and other states. Federal voter registration machinery will operate in the South next week, with aims to register thousands of Negro citizens by year end. James C. Cross Jr a 22 year old UT sophomore and son of a Fort Worth advertising executive was charged with murder in the slayings of Susan Rigsby and Shirley Ann Stark both 21. Police say Cross strangled the Chi Omega sisters and gave a statement at the time of arrest. He is jailed without bond awaiting grand jury action with the death penalty likely sought.
In Akron Ohio AP the 28th annual Soap Box Derby runs with 252 contestants from 103 U S cities and five foreign countries racing homemade cars. Pre race events include the Oil Can Trophy race down 7754 foot Derby Downs hill featuring Fess Parker Frankie Avalon and Glenn Ford.
The city razes two Maple avenue houses and a city garage behind No 2 Fire Station on East Washington street to create an off street parking area for Corry James Town Corp. L W Croskutt bid 900 as the lower offer. The plan includes 40 parking spaces for CJ employes and city workers. Original target to gravele the lot by year end may be delayed but the lot should be ready before Christmas shopping period.
City police led by Cpl. James Keppel say at least one suspect is in the wave of vandalism that hit East South Street in the First Ward Thursday night. Residents’ interviews shift age idea from youths on bikes to older youths possibly driving, tied to a chair theft from a porch on East South Street later found at Moose Lodge. Keppel plans to notify the suspect to appear Monday for questioning with Chief Harley Drake.
A Malaysian foreign ministry spokesman says Red China may stage an atomic explosion in Indonesia’s name to bolster Jakarta’s assertion of nuclear capability. The claim frames Cold War tensions as Beijing’s indirect support for Indonesian power politics.
A twin engine Beechcraft C45H crashed into All Souls Cemetery near Lakewood California after takeoff from Long Beach Airport. Eight aboard, two families, were killed. Ground residents reported debris and bodies scattered into yards and a garage. Victims identified include pilot James Whitemarsh 37 and his wife Mildred plus children Terry 16 and Mary Margaret 14, and James Edward Dent 37 his wife Rebecca and children Peggy 15 and Richard 16. Dent planned a Niagara Falls vacation. Thomas II of Pasadena owned the aircraft with associates noting he may be in Chicago. Flight plan was for Buffalo, New York. Scene described as near moderate-priced homes about 15 miles south of Los Angeles.
In July the employment picture was bright with three applicants placed per working day. William A. Michael, manager of the Pennsylvania State Employment Service local office, reported 55 local openings filled and five in out-of-town locations. A total of 105 new applications were received and 90 referred. two placements were handicapped.
Mrs. Sarah Richardson, 87, a nationally known agriculture leader from 1920 to 1940, died Thursday in Brownsville, Texas. She was an associate of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Henry Wallace in the early New Deal days.
A drifter testified that Candace Mossler, wife of multimillionaire banker Jacques Mossler, offered him 10000 to murder her husband so they could pursue a romance. The plan allegedly occurred in 1962 at Mossler’s Texas ranch. Mossler later died from stab wounds in Miami. Candace Mossler and Melville Lane Powers are jailed facing first degree murder charges with a November trial planned.
Corry Area officials disagree on the opening date for the burned wing. Jointure President Charles Kennedy says the building won’t be ready by August 20, while Dr. John Mohr expects the September 8 start to be met with only minor delays. Kennedy cites ongoing work such as door hanging and fixture installation, and calls for more craftsmen if deadlines are to be met.
Erie insurer Arthur Gardner toured four potential housing sites in Corry with Chamber of Commerce leaders Ronald Willman and Stewart Long. Gardner, connected with Ohio financial interests, weighs 36 or 72 unit rental projects, with a 72 unit plan possibly including a swimming pool. He plans to return next week with an engineer to inspect the sites.
Hiroshima’s Chugoku Shimbun editorial marked the 20th anniversary of the Aug 6 1945 bombing, calling the U S action an outrage and stating the United States did not know all consequences at the time. It warned that if it were used again it would be a full cognizance outrage.
In Washington about 600 people gathered for a four hour rally near the White House to oppose Vietnam policy as a four day assembly of unrepresented people begins. A smaller sit in at a White House gate prompted police. In Emeryville 300 pickets blocked a troop train to Oakland. In Bloomington Indiana students and professors marched downtown with antiwar signs. A Washington march to the Capitol is planned and a "declaration of conscience" was offered but not received by Johnson. Nearby Philadelphia pickets outside Independence Hall staged a counter demonstration with Students for Non-Violence and Young Americans for Freedom. President and Mrs Johnson were away at Camp David during much of the protests. The rally denounced war and urged UN admission of Red China. Continued on Page Two.
In the Mekong Delta region south of Saigon Communist guerrillas pressed mortar barrages on government outposts using 60mm and 81mm rounds. Casualties were labeled light in some strikes with no losses reported in others. A Navy Skyraider from the carrier Midway was shot down near Dong Hoi, its pilot presumed killed after heavy ground fire. A Viet Cong medical facility discovered southwest of Saigon held 14 wards and five tons of medicines. Additional Viet Cong mortar attacks targeted Duc Co camp in Pleiku Province, with no reported casualties there. Forward air controllers said about 200 guerrillas were killed in 24 hours, pending confirmation. North Viet Nam raids hit an explosives plant near Hanoi using F-105s and Navy Skyhawks.
The son of Wisconsin congressman Henry S. Reuss faces murder charges after patrolman B. Cowart died during a confrontation in Mississippis northeast town of West Point. Reuss, 18, said he did not shove the officer and claimed a badge button with a civil rights slogan was removed from his shirt. He has been in Mississippi since June as a civil rights volunteer and will attend Stanford University as a sophomore next month. The incident occurred during the arrest of 48 demonstrators for blocking sidewalks.
