Flaming gasoline and exploding bombs shredded a crippled B 29 bomber at Fatrf ield Suisun Air Base during takeoff. Seventeen airmen died and many others were injured including families living nearby. Brig Gen Robert F Travis, wounded but surviving, was among those aboard. The four engine bomber carried 10 to 12 500 pound bombs, which began to detonate shortly after impact.
Pfe. Joseph Drexler, 44, of Sharpshore Pennsylvania, was fatally injured in a head on crash on a curve near Glencos New Mexico. He died two hours later at Ruidoso Horda Valley Hospital after the accident.

Four occupants of two automobiles were injured when their cars struck Pennsylvania Railroad freight cars blocking an underpass in Seward Cambria County. All were cared for at town hospital in stable condition. No PRR crew injured. The 108 car train from Allentown to Pittsburgh derailed one engine but remained upright. Cause under investigation. Three crews at the scene about 40 miles east of Pittsburgh.

In San Francisco Aus 7 Harry Bridges leaders lawyers seek release from jail on a writ of habeas corpus. Bridges was taken into custody Saturday after Peder Tidge George Harris revoked Bridges 25000 bail. Counsel said they would petition the TS circuit court of appeals for a writ and may appeal for bail, asserting Harris overstepped precedents in ordering imprisonment.
U N secretary general cites need for bold statesmanship to avert further war risks as Cold War lines solidify. In a July report to the General Assembly from Flushing Meadows, he urges action to push Korea talks forward and warns against a world split into rival blocs. The Security Council debates the Korean War, with the Soviet Union demanding action against North Korea and China.

In Saltsburg Pennsylvania on August 7 Paul Bakes Jr. 24 of Slickville drowned after slipping from an overturned rowboat at the Loyashanna flood control dam. Three other Slickville men were aboard when the boat capsized with all four from Slickville.
More than 3000 people jammed Mare Park Saturday afternoon for the Colmes Firemen Festival in Columbus. The event featured a long parade, prize tractor pull, and fireworks. Winners included Edward Schumbline and John Boterata in first class, Ed Schranbilne and W. Royal in strand class, Paul Mitchell and Hobart Shreve in third, and William Craker and Hobart Shreve in Foust class row. Prizes ranged from $1 to $8, with other prizes awarded for best marching unit and most men in line. A baseball game saw Columbus defeat Sherman 18 to 2. Tickets donated by Gilson Building Supply. Two prisoners escaped today from Rockview prison farm after switching the tow team and barn access. Honard Black, 20, Erie county, jailed four to eight years for armed robbery, and Alfred Burns worth, 22, Greece county, serving one to three years for burglary and larceny, were identified by Deputy Warden C Rhoudi. They reportedly left the farm by driving a team to the barn and walking away, instead of hauling a load.
A weekend two car crash left Norman Faust, 26, of Silvar Grove uninjured as his 194Link veered near Cluny. Police cited Edwit J. Cale of Mayuilliy RO and others in connection with the incident, and damages were estimated around 350 dollars.
Police report two Ohio men died when their shell plane crashed into the area lake near Livville spillway after takeoff. Coroner says both occupants died instantly from injuries as officers recovered the bodies from the water. Route 2 Pipont residents Hagstrom, 33, and Benen, about 35, were identified. Aircraft diving four times preceded the crash according to witnesses.
In Richmond a 29 year old paraplegic veteran Charles E. Kennedy of Burgettstown Pennsylvania is charged with murdering 28 year old Vance Clary of Dundieman North Carolina in a hospital paraplegic ward. The two men had been driving together on a pass when their car crash led to a quarrel and Kennedy fired six times with a 25 caliber pistol. Dr H L Wright said several other paraplegic patients witnessed the incident and that Clary died at the scene.
