Lawrence Meats, a well known young farmer from Waitsburg, drowned while attempting to rescue his wife after she fell into a deep hole in French Creek near Wattsburg. Mrs. Beaty, able to swim briefly, was saved by bystanders as efforts to revive Meats failed. He operated a farm on Beaverdam road and leaves behind a wife and three small children.
