Charles B. Hasbrouck, 76, longtime Concord resident and gravel business operator, died at Community Hospital from injuries after being struck by a car driven by George Stockton. He had been hospitalized since the incident near the Hare Creek last Monday while waiting on Highway. Survived by widow, daughter Miss Johnson, and sister Mrs. Valentine. Valley City today reports a rail accident on Wabash No. 3 when freight caboose failed to clear a siding. Fireman Miter Watash was killed. several crew members injured as passenger train No. 3 struck the caboose.
Elizabeth Tinker Usher died Thursday evening at home on South Center and West Pleasant streets after a seven year decline following a fall that broke her hip. Widow of G. Usher, she had been active in First Presbyterian Church and local literary clubs. Survived by nephews including William Duiker of Slippery Rock. Services Saturday at 10:30 at home with Rev. Cressey of First Presbyterian presiding. Burial in Grove Cemetery in the Usher lot.
Two men were injured when an airplane made a forced landing in a field near Williamsport Pennsylvania. Owner and pilot LB Mayer of Philadelphia suffered a broken arm and severe bruising. A G Paetel of Harrisburg, en route to Poltsville, was badly beaten.
Angered citizens sought to enter the Stephens county jail at Okla to seize James Forest a Black man accused of attacking a white woman. Guards repelled the crowd keeping Forest inside as authorities maintained ongoing protection around the exterior of the jail after a previous confrontation broke up the mob tonight.
Captain Frank Courtney and three crew members were saved by the S S Minnewaska after their aeroplane caught fire and ditched near mid Atlantic. The four men Fred Pierce FH Hosmer W Gilmour and Courtney were rescued after about twelve hours at sea as ships diverted to aid. The White Star liner Godre said the plane was abandoned as the crew boarded the rescue ship.
About 4 000 infantry engineers and medical troops complete a two week camp at Mount Gretna Pa and begin packing as units move out tonight and tomorrow Brig Gen Edward Martin arrives with 55th Infantry to coordinate main body 8 000 men expected to pass through camp as 56th Infantry brigade 103rd engineers and elements of 108th medical resume civilian life until next summer unless needed again.
In Atlanta on August 3 Bula Mae Thompson made a final bid to save Clifford Thompson from execution after Governor Hardman declined a respite following an alleged confession by Mrs Thompson that she and her lover were guilty of the murder of Coleman Osborne, a Chatsworth merchant. Thompson and Jim Moss, the other convict, face the electric chair early afternoon at the state prison.
Palo Alto Aug 4 United Press Herbert Hoover, the Republican nominee, refused visitors and worked alone in his study to complete the final draft of his 6500 word acceptance speech. He rewrote, trimmed and wrestled with the document as influential officials press him to touch on many public issues from recent years.
Musical comedy star Fred Stone was seriously hurt when his private plane made a forced landing near Trumbull Field in Groton Connecticut. He was piloting to show his daughter Dorothy the aircraft. a motor failure caused the craft to crash in a nearby field.
Harry Bryan, 26, of Myersdale Pennsylvania, drowned yesterday while fishing on the Youghiogheny River. He slipped from a rock into ten feet of water as companions couldn't rescue him. his body was recovered hours later. Temperatures climbed in the Great Lakes area with three heat deaths and one drowning reported yesterday and last night.
Two Ford cars were stolen last evening along East Washington street and the carnival grounds. Police and state constabulary efforts to locate the vehicles failed, with one car owned by Winifred Wary of Ripley New York and another by John Potock of R D 6 the city. Investigations suggest the cars were driven to another city as no trace is found today. No developments on related Ras Range gas station theft or Skinner Station burglary. Sheriff Jefferson was unavailable to follow up the Columbus Avenue case.
City soucnor stone mines sis morning received word from Supt Rhoades of the P R R at Oi City promising definitely that the Pennsylvania Railroad will begin work Monday morning repairing and rebuilding all grade crossings in bad shape. The rail line will continue until conditions are satisfactory. The city engineer awaits word from the railroad about flood hazard work for Corry Jamestown Corp and TE R Ro has not answered regarding crossing. The Center street crossing in Erie is the most serious neglect.
New Bedford Mass August 3 The textile strikers rejected the arbitration proposal officially announced today The State Board of Conciliation and Arbitration had proposed a settlement to end the 46 week long labor dispute but the member union voted almost unanimously against the recommendation The announcement was made by BG Batty secretary of the textile council
