Amos Way Bennett, veteran pilot who helped Byrd and Lindbergh in polar and transatlantic missions, dies of pneumonia in Quebec at 10:45 am in Jeffrey Mele Hospital. Despite serum brought by Lindbergh, treatment fails against the pneumonia that felled the famed aviator days after his brave health battles. Bennett’s death follows his near-miss with the Bremen rescue mission and the emotional support of Byrd.
April 25 report says Lindbergh, despite his valiant effort and a dramatic serum flight from New York to Quebec, failed to save Bennett. He left Quebec at 4:41 a.m. and headed back to New York in a rapid flight, saluting the crowd as snow hampered the airfield. He aimed to reach New York by afternoon to fulfill duties after news of Bennett’s death.
In Sayre Pennsylvania incomplete returns show Louis McFadden defeating Mrs Cornelia Bryce Pinchot for the Republican nomination in the Fifteenth district by an estimated 1500 to 2500 votes. Pinchot carried her home district and beat McFadden in Canton.
Storm forecasts delay Bremen relief flight from Greenly Island as Major Fitzmaurice and Bernt Balchen prepare to fly in the Bremen rescue plane. Engineers work to repair the craft while weather worsens, delaying the trans Atlantic effort up the St. Lawrence with dusk approaching.
