San Francisco and the Congress of Vienna comparison
The San Francisco conference is likened to Vienna rather than Paris, focusing on unconditional surrender and power bargaining. It argues that Vienna reshaped Europe through secret negotiations among victors, with alliances enforcing divisions and changing maps, contrasting with aims for world organization.

Germany's Lost Generation and postwar potential
Boyle analyzes postwar Germany's youth from ages 10 to 30 as the “lost generation” shaped by Hitler and the Nazi regime. He argues many are loyal to the Führer’s brutal doctrine, while some younger children and older Germans remain open to democratic reform, needing guidance to become usable citizens. He warns of the danger posed by Hitlerjugend remnants and underground networks, but sees hope in those who show friendly, curious, and constructive attitudes toward American troops and democratic ideals.
