Serious Wreck Near Jamestown Injures Railroad Officials
Jamestown April 24 Superintendent George Maltby of the Jamestown Westfield and Northwestern Railway and Motorman Frank Wood were seriously injured in a collision between a freight car and a passenger car on the I. W. & N. W. line between Maggie and Westfield yesterday afternoon about 2720 o clock. Maltby suffered a compound dislocation of the right ankle and Wood a broken leg. both were rushed to Jamestown and taken to the hospital. The crash followed failure of the baggage car crew to Shay orders, per a statement from the manager Moynihan. The passenger car carried a party of railroad officials and officers from several lines, with names including J. D. Brown and A. Hintod, among others. The train crew and witnesses described Maltby directing efforts to assist Wood, while Maltby remained conscious despite pain and directed unhooking the cars. The accident halted the regular car No. 10 near Glenelanawitch, and the freight car struck head-on after disregarded signals on a sharp curve. The injured were cared for while colleagues observed Maltby’s calm conduct amid the danger.
