Richard Thompson, 28, of Pittsburgh, was killed Sunday when he fell about 100 feet from a hang glider at Brady's Bend Township in Allegheny County. Authorities said the accident occurred near the east bank of the Allegheny River and the kite detached from the harness due to a coupling malfunction. Thompson died after being rushed to Butler Memorial Hospital. coroner William Young ruled the death accidental.
Warren County School Board appointed assistant superintendent John Binney as acting superintendent while a new head is sought. His interim term runs to July 1 for up to one year, with Binney also a potential candidate. The board also approved paying attorney James Blackman 1,172.50 for an investigation into charges against former superintendent Howard Thompson.
In Irvine Warren County an orphaned bear cub was found Tuesday night after a two day search. The cub’s mother was killed following a Sunday night auto collision on Route 6 near Irvine. District Game Protector W D Schultz used a dog to locate the cub near Brokenstraw Creek and left the mother’s body as a lure. The Game Commission notes success with bears adopting orphaned cubs in similar cases.
