Attempted assassination shocks New York mayor and counsel

An unknown assailant fired at Mayor John Purvey Mitchell and Corporation Counsel Polk as they entered a car. Polk was wounded in the chin, Mitchell tackled the shooter and detained him at City Hall station. The suspect gave no name, a letter to Mayor Armstrong of Pittsburgh found, and police described possible mental disturbance. The mayor and Polk were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Fatal Runaway At Warren

Mrs. Wickstrom aged 50 died of internal injuries after a runaway incident in Warren Virginia. A carriage horse frightened by an auto is believed to have bolted from a nearby store and struck her as she stood in her yard. The crash occurred around noon and she did not survive beyond a few hours.

President's Daughter to wed McAdoo May 7 at Washington

The President and Mrs Wilson announced the marriage of their daughter Eleanor to Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo. The ceremony will occur May 7 with only family, cabinet members, the Vice President and Mrs Marshall in attendance.

Corry High to Open Season with Warren Game

Corry High School plans an afternoon game tomorrow against Warren High School to begin the baseball season. Coach Min Delury will select the Corry lineup for the opener, with Hum and Hop king as battery mates and Wollman sharing duties across the season. About twenty five students are trying out for the squad as facilities recover from recent mine conditions.

Eleven Die In New York Apartment Fire

An early morning blaze in a six story apartment building on Highth Avenue leaves eleven dead and five seriously injured, with many trapped inside their units. The victims include Edward Wallace, Mrs. N Spencer, Muriel Davis, Mrs. George Davis, and six unidentified men. The building housed about forty rooms mainly occupied by theater workers.

Woman Dies After East Sixth Street Fire in Cleveland

A fire in an East Sixth Street apartment in Cleveland injured five residents and killed one woman, Mrs. Bousia Mu honey, who jumped from a third story window and died en route to hospital with a fractured skull. Two other injured occupants also suffered jumps to escape the blaze.

Oil Prices Cut This Morning After February Jump

Oil markets fell this morning after the February jump as Joseph Beep Ol Busing Interests announced reductions. Pennsylvania dropped $2.10 to $2.40, Mercer Black $2.00 to $1.00, Cuball $2.07 to $1.70, New Castle $2.00 to $1.00, and Carning $2.00 to $1.75. Somer Set and Ragland saw no change. Overproduction cited as the reason for the price drop.

Nurses Hold Annual Alumni Banquet at Phoenix Hotel

Graduate nurses from the Corry Hospital Training School hosted their annual alumni banquet at the Phoenix Hotel last evening. About 20 members attended a five course dinner with carnation decorations as they welcomed the class of 1914 and heard remarks from Mas Harton and several speakers.

Municipal club hosts banquet and initiates six new members

Last evening in the Payne building the Municipal club held a special banquet and amoker. Six new members were initiated and a business meeting followed. The Arcade catered the banquet and a Hewmoker was played. A large turnout attended as many new members had recently joined and the organization grows steadily.

Mexican Dictator Seeks War Plea to Rally Nation

Reports from Mexico City indicate Victoriano Huerta desires a formal declaration of war by the United States to unify Mexicans against a common enemy. In Washington Secretary Bryan hints at progress toward settlement while signaling uncertainty over Huerta’s leverage. European editorials suggest foreign press views Huerta as gaining ground on Wilson.
