Hanoi issued a lengthy editorial denying unconditional peace talks and dismissing U.S. grant terms as unacceptable while vowing to fight on. Washington and U.N. officials offered cautious responses, saying Hanoi had not rejected offers, and noting nonaligned nations’ appeal for talks.
About 1,100 Army riflemen including military police will be sent to South Vietnam to bolster security at roughly 75 locations where Americans are based. They will relieve guard duties for helicopter mechanics cooks and supply clerks, and help strengthen logistics and port facilities along the coast as part of broader reinforcements.
A U S Public Health Service report notes a 9.7 percent rise in cancer deaths nationwide over four years, with Erie County showing higher mortality than many areas. In 1963 to 1964 the county recorded 407 cancer deaths, 156 per 100 000, while Pennsylvania averaged 174 and national rate stood at 150. Lung cancer caused 16 percent of local deaths, 18 percent nationally, and early detection remains a key factor. The piece also highlights low cancer research funding compared with other expenditures and notes April as Cancer Control Month. A separate item reports 5 year old Mary Mulligan of Reading killed crossing a street by an automobile.
A 16 year old Spring Creek driver Robert Metcalfe Jr. was hospitalized at Corry Memorial Hospital with facial lacerations and body bruises after his car failed to negotiate a curve and struck a tree on a dirt road near Picidilli Hill. Kenneth Lacey, 17, of Corry, was treated and released. The damage was listed as total with about $1,000 in losses.
Corry observers Mr and Mrs Richard Mountain report this winter totaled 139 inches surpassing typical patterns, with the 1963 64 season at 177 inches and seven year averages around 150 inches. Months show variability from nine inches in November to 35 inches last month, with December January February totals spread across 1 39 25 and 13 in March and 5 in April.
King Frederik and Queen Ingrid of Denmark will contribute 3500 to aid Greece earthquake victims. Their daughter Anne-Marie, married King Constantine of Greece last year, strengthening ties as relief efforts begin.
Washington died April 12, 1945. Ambassador W Averell Harriman unveiled a small marble memorial near the National Archives on Pennsylvania Avenue, honoring Franklin D Roosevelt and his fight for a just society and world peace. He cited Roosevelts plain-people appeal and leadership in wartime alliance and liberty, noting Arlington grave and front lines. Anna Roosevelt Halsted accepted for the family.
General Motors announces William Turben of Columbus as the franchised Oldsmobile dealer in Columbus. The appointment is effective this week with six Oldsmobiles arriving today on display. Turben previously ran the Chevrolet agency and says the Olds line is an addition, not affecting the Chevrolet dealership.
In Marion Indiana three tornadoes struck, injuring no worshippers inside a Nazarepe church where Rev. George Dunnington said all hearts calmed after the twister passed. The church sustained no real damage though nearby homes were flattened and a shopping center and VA Hospital roof were torn off. many elderly patients were treated for shock and moved to other facilities.
Hussell Malory, three years owner of Mallory’s Meat Market at 234 West Washington Street, sells Mallory’s Market to Harold Beebe of Union City. Beebe, ex-Meat Manager at Union City A&P, brings years of experience and plans to offer a full meat line. Beebe leads the Union City Sportsmen’s Club and is well known among local sportsmen. Mallory takes a vacation. Beebe plans a grand opening soon.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Dr. Olive B. Steinmelz, 90, a physician who practiced in Home stead for 61 years. She died last Saturday at her home.
Associated Press reports at least 214 killed as twisters swept Indiana Ohio Michigan Illinois and Wisconsin with extensive damage. Indiana led fatalities with 109 followed by Ohio 59 Michigan 36 and Illinois 7. Red Cross treated 178 injured. debris blocked highways and towns suffered destroyed homes and trailers damaged or washed away. Continued on Page Five.
The Minnesota River and other rivers exceeded banks as the state faced its costliest flood. President Johnson declared 39 counties a disaster area and promised federal aid for public facilities. About 30 highways were closed and the Red Cross estimated 20000 homeless. National Guardsmen were deployed and an engineers battalion ordered to Hutchinson. Continued on Page Eight.
More than 150 preschoolers hunted roughly 1,500 candy eggs at Mead Park in a late afternoon event. John J. Sank, 2 year local man, sentenced to six months to two years in Western Penitentiary after pleading guilty to burglary. Corry police arrested Sank and two juveniles on February 4 for breaking into Bill's Place on West Main Street. They reached the tavern by roof and hole in the floor, escaping with $47 in beer and whisky.
