Conservationists Uneasy Over Nixon Interior Pick Russell
Washington AP conservationists express disappointment at President Nixon's failure to appoint a clearly qualified environmentalist as undersecretary of the Interior. They withhold judgment on multimillionaire Fred J. Russell, unknown in environment and resources, to succeed Russell E. Train. Russell’s appointment seen as support for Interior Secretary Hickel. Russell, a self made millionaire and Republican activist, declines to discuss qualifications until Senate hearings. Conservation leaders regret Train’s replacement lacks an equal conservationist profile.
