Coronado High Students to Hear Guard Talk on Joining

Juniors and seniors at Coronado High School are to hear a talk Thursday by Sergeant Joseph C. Wright of Coronado's Battery California National Guard. Wright will outline the Guard's training program and benefits for youths over 17 with no prior military experience. A short military film will be shown by Corporal G. K. ber.

Council Urges Cramer To Expedite Tidelands Bill

The City Council authorized Mayor Neal to telegram Assemblyman Cramer urging quick passage of Assembly Bill No 1168 to enable Coronado to acquire tidelands from Glorietta Bay to North Island. If approved Coronado would hold tidelands in trust and could develop wharves docks piers and utilities for navigation fisheries residences or recreation.

Coronado to Host Band Festival in San County

Coronado High School hosts a two day band festival beginning Friday with over 2000 instrumental students from county elementary and secondary schools. The event features non competitive performances with solos and ensembles in the high school auditorium and band room ending with a Saturday parade down Orange Avenue around 5 p.m.

Brig. Gen. W. D. Styer was named to the harbor committee by the council. The council also authorized San Diego Tent & Awning Co to buy $30 worth of land from Silver Strand ranch monthly.

Coronado Hole in One Winners Dominate Compass Tourney

Police officer Don Watson won the men’s division with a 2 feet 9 1 2 inch putt to claim the Compass trophy. Clyde Scully was runner up at 2 feet 10 1 2 inches. Mrs. Kelley won the women’s trophy with a drive to 12 feet, edging Mrs. P. B. Moore by 1 foot 11 inches. Other winners include Col. Al Watson Jim Reading Ensign C Pierozzi Cloyd McDowell Capt. Coronado faces fines tied to red footprint mystery

Coronado court fined two store clerks $100 each for defacing sidewalks with red footprints used in a Buy in Coronado campaign. The prints were linked to a reward offer but the clerks claimed it was a civic project. The case involved City officials and a plan for sidewalk cleanup with city approval. City Employees Set Ballot for Civil Service Changes

At a meeting of the City Employees Association on a recent day the group approved placing changes to the Civil Service ordinance on the ballot for the April 1950 general election. President Ted Kohl said the plan includes extending Civil Service rules to city department heads. The delay aims to avoid a costly special election.

Coronado Motorcyclist Dies After Silver Strand Crash

Martin Eugene Clasing a 24 year old Coronado resident died when his motorcycle was struck on the Silver Strand highway near Coronado Hospital shortly before 7 30 p m. Frances Fiorito 15 who rode with him was treated for cuts and injuries. Officer say Eugene Lucé 27 Navy chief yeoman stationed at Amphibious Training Base drove the car involved. Funeral services for Clasing are set for Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church Coronado. He is survived by his parents two sisters and other relatives.

Judge Wattawa Fines Two Drivers in Local Court

In a recent session Judge E. S. Wattawa fined Richard S. Bates of the Naval Air Station $300 after Bates pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated on Saturday morning. Bates was arrested at Pomona Avenue and the Silver Strand Highway. Also fined was Howard G. Clark of San Francisco $40 for a hit and run that damaged three parked vehicles on Alameda Boulevard near Fourth Avenue early Sunday morning.
