General George Fisher Discusses Displaced Persons

Brig. General George W. Fisher of the California National Guard spoke at Coronado Kiwanis about handling displaced persons in Europe after the war. He said many D P s remain in camps because they have no homes or refuse to return to Russian occupied areas.

Social Director Appointed At Hotel Del Coronado

Mrs. Florence E. Shelley has arrived from the Desert Inn in Palm Springs to become social director of Hotel del Coronado. Harry S. Ward announced the appointment as she will oversee summer social events, beach parties, boating, fishing, dancing and sports activities assisted by Miss Helen Williams.

Bertha Werner Named Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge

Bertha Werner was named noble grand of the Silver Strand Rebekah Lodge at the Masonic Temple business meeting on Wednesday evening. Noble Grand Indo Cleveland presided through the elections and new officers were announced with William Southard as vice grand Edith Savage as recording secretary and Peggy Sellers as trustee.

Draper Travel Agency to Open at Hotel Del Coronado

Draper Travel Bureau managed by Eric H. Draper former San Diego First National Bank Travel Department head will open next Monday on the front veranda of Hotel del Coronado beside the Western Union office. He previously worked with Thomas Cook & Son in San Francisco and Los Angeles and will run the Coronado booking office as San Diego area correspondent. Draper also presides over the House of Pacific Relations Cottage of England in San Diego.

Dr Barkin Opens New Optometry Office in Orange Avenue

Dr William L Barkin optometrist formally opened his new four room offices at 903 Orange Avenue with friends and associates in attendance. The former address was 1133 Loma Avenue. The highlight is a modern reception room with ridged plywood panels and a Chinese decorative motif. Peggy Perry continues as receptionist.

Burglar Nets $25 From Nighttime Beauty Shop Burglary

An out-of-town burglar, described as a coastwise floater, hit Catherine's Beauty Shop at 1111 10th Street and Naomi's Beauty Shop at 1019 Avenue, netting about $25 for the night’s work. Police Sgt Hoppe and Officer Kalland investigated. Chief Jordan noted similar recent burglaries in San Diego and Santa Ana.

Young Republicans to Attend San Diego Mock Convention

Coronado Young Republicans invited to a mock convention at Imig Manor next Tuesday night. San Diego Republican organization sponsors the event. Mrs Edythe Galbraith will head the Coronado delegation for the presidential nomination meeting beginning at 8 p.m.

Benefit Fashion Show at Coronado Yacht Club

Twenty models will exhibit over 80 beach and swim wear outfits at a benefit fashion show tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. under the direction of Mrs. Nelson with assistance from several committee members. Bowls of flowers will decorate the newly decorated club house and tea will be hosted by Mrs. Ben Seymour and committee members.

Rotarians Hear Story Behind the Palomar Observatory

Dr. Clifford E. Smith of San Diego State College spoke to Coronado Rotary Club at Hotel del Coronado about the Palomar Observatory. He noted the 200 inch mirror nearing completion under California Institute of Technology oversight with Dr Ira Bowen directing, and praised George E. Hale for the project.
