Crown Pool Closed By Coronado City Council

Coronado City Council, in a special session led by Health Officer Dr William Booth, ordered the immediate indefinite closing of Crown Pool on the Silver Strand due to the polio outbreak. Recreation programs for minors were curtailed and beach activities restricted for the emergency.

Coronado Chamber weighs Glorietta Bay dredging

Coronado Chamber of Commerce board discussed dredging the Glorietta Bay channel due to ATB activity at the Amphibious Training Base. Commodore Ben Seymour said Navy and Army engineers may delay action for up to ten years, with estimated cost around 80000 dollars. The harbor committee, chaired by Henry Weston, will study the recommendations, and members will be invited to all open board meetings.

Tax Protests Lead to City Assessment Reductions

Protests by Colonels Challacombe and Cole prompted the City Council to approve reductions in their property assessments as recommended by City Assessor A A Mathewson. Similar cuts were ordered for properties in the Palm and Avenues triangle owned by Alfred Laing and D O Coffman. Archibald D Abel dissented, arguing the Palm and Avenue area should not be reduced.

Appointment of New Glorietta School Principal

Ben I. Schei n is named principal of Glorietta Elementary School effective next month. Coronado Superintendent A. E. Schaefer credits him as highly recommended from Chula Vista Junior High. Schei n holds degrees from North Dakota State College, University of California, Claremont Colleges, and Montana State, and has prior teaching and administrative experience in San Diego City schools, Victor Montana, and Chula Vista. He is married with two children.

Compass Tuesday Edition Goes To Subscribers Only

The Coronado Compass will distribute the Tuesday edition by carrier to paid subscribers starting now. Carrier boys may take subscriptions and earn full credit and cash commissions for routes served. The Friday edition will still reach Coronado households Naval Air Station and the South Bay area until further notice.

Coronado Golf Resort Plan Revealed At Public Hearing

M Bert Fisher announced plans for a multi million dollar Coronado Beach Hotel and Country Club with a redesigned nine hole golf course and public access. The project totals about four and a half million dollars and seeks a zone exception from the City Council, with partners including Herman Miller and Income Property Associates.

New Methodist Pastor Speaks At Kiwanis Meeting

Dr. David Lee Mounts, new pastor of St. Pauls Methodist Church and Kiwanis transfer member, outlined church service club ties and urged Kiwanians to support community duties at the La Avenida Cafe meeting. First Sokoloff Concert Del Coronado Draws Dense Crowd

Nikolai Sokoloff opened three Coronado Music Society concerts at the Hotel del Coronado. The orchestra played Bach Concerto in D Major with vigorous direction and a blend of strings and woodwinds. Copland Quiet City and Bartok Romanian Folk Dances drew strong responses for modern and folk influences.
