City Employees Vote on Retirement System Participation

At the city council meeting the Civil Service Commission was authorized to conduct elections among the police fire and miscellaneous city departments to decide separately whether they will participate in the city retirement program Coronado voters recently approved joining the State Retirement System Effective date follows the resolution of intention to approve a contract with the Board of Administration The system is run by eight members including three system members a bank official a life insurance official the Director of Finance a State Personnel Board member and a University of California official

Coronado Night Promises Moon Over Coronado Debut

A Coronado event debuts the song Moon Over Coronado sung by Miss Bailey Warren with the Pacific Square ensemble led by Eddie Wheeler. Blanche, a former Coronado resident, wrote the tune and dedicates it to Coronado. Mrs. Odle notes her 16 years composing and radio performances.

Telephone firm seeks rate increase in Coronado

The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph asked the California Public Utilities Commission yesterday for a rate rise statewide. Company officials cited rising labor and material costs and the need to attract new capital to upgrade plant and meet demand. If approved, the move would lift Coronado and California intrastate revenues about 14 percent while long distance tolls within 100 miles stay largely unchanged.

Post Office Issues Suggestions for Christmas Mail

The Coronado Post Office issued tips to ease holiday mailing. They advise strong boxes with cushioning, plain clear addresses, avoid perishable items, do not enclose letters in parcels, buy stamps early, use first class or air mail, and mail as early as possible in December. Friday the high school stage play Angelica Inc. plays at 8 15 p m in the auditorium. Saturday features Coronado versus Grossmont in a Metro League basketball game at 8 p m in the H L S gym. Monday marks a grand opening for Coronado Christmas shopping with a 2500 light display on Orange Avenue after dark and stores open until 9 p m. Tuesday hosts the final public hearing on new zoning ordinances and map at City Hall chambers.

Coronado Officer Receives Legion of Merit in Ceremony

Commander E J MacGregor of Coronado was awarded the Legion of Merit by Rear Admiral L T DuBose aboard USS Curtiss. He already holds the Navy Cross and British Distinguished Cross for submarine patrols in enemy waters and is related to Rear Admiral Worden of Civil War fame. He serves as assistant operation and submarine officer on Admiral DuBose’s staff and lives with his wife Frances Ruth MacGregor at 505 Pomona Avenue.

Community Chest Nears Two-Thirds of Goal in 1948-49 Drive

A partial total of 10626.39 from the Community Chest drive is reported as two thirds of the 16874.56 goal for next year. Mrs. Curtis Hutton notes final figures hinge on Naval Air Station confirmation of equitable North Island donations. The drive funds a 5000 dollar X-ray machine for Coronado Hospital.

Region 12 Sea Scout Conclave At NAB Base

More than 600 Sea Scouts and adult leaders from four western states and Hawai gather for a three day Region 12 rendezvous at the NAB base. The event includes a water carnival aquatic and boat races and a bay tour.
