Navy awards contracts for giant carrier to Newport News
The Navy awarded the contract for a 65 000 to 80 000 ton carrier to Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, with potential speed around 36 knots and a 1000 foot waterline length. The vessel will lack an island and may appear in San Diego Harbor.
