Sacramento March 11. During debate on the Wright Stanton direct primary bill Speaker Stanton cast a deciding vote against his own measure on a district scheme amendment. Grove L Johnson accused Stanton of authoring the pledge amendment and Stanton then faced opposition as the district scheme opponents argued it would nullify the direct primary. The amendment failed 26 to 42 with Stanton seen as wavering on the bill.
