In Belfast and Londonderry the Protestant Catholic clash surges anew as youths hurl fire bombs and stones. The unrest has damaged industries and forced thousands from homes while British troops try to keep order amid political strain and calls for reform.
President Nixon's staff left open the possibility that the United States is in secret contact with Hanoi about Vietnam peace prospects. Press Secretary Ziegler declined to deny the premise while noting no discussion of specific contacts.
Willy Brandt, soon to be 56, helps the Social Democrats win 42.7 percent in a postwar turning election. The 1959 reform platform moved the party from leftist clashes to a Roosevelt style free market with planned elements, aided by Brandt's Berlin mayoralty and later as foreign minister. The coalition with the Free Democrats marks the party’s first government participation since before World War II.
President Nixon remains committed to nominating Clement Haynsworth to the Supreme Court though White House aides acknowledge new information critical of the judge has emerged. Ziegler notes renewed checks after press reports while Scott and Griffin refrain from pledging support and debate continues over Haynsworths suitability and integrity.
Senate investigators press why Sgt. Maj. William Wooldridge remains in a trusted post at White Sands New Mexico amid a multimillion dollar graft probe. CID and witnesses link the meeting at Ft Benning to schemes in Vietnam and Germany.
Franklin Circuit Court stayed Fire Marshall Williams from closing the Whitley County Courthouse this Sunday. Judge Jerry Taylor argued the Fiscal Court acted against Williams without authority to vacate the building by October 5, fearing no alternative offices. The stay remains until further court order.
Kentucky Governor Louie B. Nunn angrily vows to withhold approval of future anti poverty projects after the U S Office of Economic Opportunity overrode his veto of a Breathitt Wolfe Owsley and Lee counties program. OEO says charges against the project were unfounded and Nunn refrains from endorsing further bids.
Mostly fair conditions give way to a warming trend through Sunday. Night lows range from 56 to 61. Sunday highs reach 83 to 88. Monday stays warm with a chance of showers late in the day.
