Strike Threat Next Week Railroad Unions Hope Nixon Will Stay Out

Five railroad union negotiators met with Secretary Shultz in Washington seeking to avoid a Nixon national emergency and a 60 day postponement. The shopcraft unions plan a 12:01 a.m. Saturday strike against six railroads including Santa Fe and Erie Lackawanna, affecting 60,000 workers.

Dr E C Masden academic dean announced 1820 students have registered for the fall semester as full time day students. The total includes over 500 freshmen and is 107 above last year’s record enrollment of 1713.

Thieu Eyes Larger Vietnam Pullout in 1970

President Thieu said a large number of American troops could be withdrawn in 1970 beyond 60 000 redeployed this year. He projected South Vietnamese forces to grow by 150 000 to 200 000 next year, contingent on U S material funds training and leadership. Ky had put 150 000 to 200 000 as a possible end-year total. The first withdrawal of 25 000 was completed last August with a 35 000 troop round starting soon.

FBI Joins McCreary County Hunt

Cincinnati police and federal agents joined a manhunt around U S 27 near the Kentucky Tennessee line for two accused killers. Two other men were held on four counts each of first degree murder for the holdup slayings of four women. Raymond Kassow and Carl Ingle appeared with no bond as the grand jury considered charges.
