Concord draft board lists four locals who passed the pre medical army exam at Fort Devens. Donald A. Spencer of Acton is the sole town member to be called. Others on 21 day furlough report back September at Devens. a later Navy call will follow. A screening was held last Thursday at the Concord state armory as the board prepares October induction.
Concord-Brooks on Monument Street opens September 21 for beginners and September 22 for other pupils. Middlesex for Boys on Lowell Road opens September 22 for new students and September 28 for returning students. Concord Academy for Girls on Main Street opens September 14 for boarders and September 15 for day pupils. Fenn School for Boys on Monument Street begins its fall term September 15.
Indoor drill last week contrasted with outdoor sessions on Mondays. Capt Pratt led calisthenics and close order drill, then Sgt Fox reviewed map reading. Labor Day shift moved this week’s drill to Tuesday September 7. Governor Saltonstall says state plans to recruit to 45, eight more needed including cook, bugler, and radio technician. Lower age limit reduced to 17 to 50, training for youths before federal service. Capt Pratt welcomes interested men at the Concord Armory most evenings.
Local interest engagement of Miss Martha Prouty daughter of Mr and Mrs C N Prouty of Spencer to James DeNormandie son of Dr and Mrs Robert L DeNormandie of Lincoln. DeNormandie is known in Concord has a local business and Rotary Club member who graduated from Harvard in 1929. Early fall wedding planned.
Miss Charlotte Hutchins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hutchins of Concord, married John Richard Bemis, son of Mrs. A Farwell Bemis and the late Mr. Bemis, last Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church Elim Street. The couple's reception was at Punkatasset Farm. The bride, a Bryn Mawr graduate, and the groom, a Harvard College alumnus, both have notable affiliations and work on a MIT war project respectively.
Concord CHS opens wartime football prep with about 30 candidates reporting. Captain Parker and Coach Spokesfield greet players as heavy workouts begin to shape the Red and White team for the opening game September 25 at Prichard and a Thanksgiving finish at Lexington. Veterans Bill Pearson Joey Dee Denisevich and Captain Parker lead the outlook with several freshmen seen as varsity timber.
In Concord and West Concord, Mrs Dolan Mrs Dee and Mrs Arkin chaperoned a hospital game and dance party at Lowell General for patients. Constance ONeill and Dorothy Griffiths sang. The group plans more activities in September and seeks volunteers and new members through Mary Chase Elizabeth Alexander and Ivan Servais.
Corwithian Lodge of A F and A M will hold its annual meeting and officer election on Monday September 13 at the Masonic Temple in Concord Worshipful Master Russell F of Acton will preside and the meeting will resume the regular fall schedule
Funeral services for Mrs. Bert Wilkins of Carlisle were held at Bigelow chapel. She lived on Lowell road and passed away last Wednesday after a long illness. Survived by a son Nason Wilkins and daughter Miss Helen Wilkins, two grandchildren, and Charles Forsaith. Christian Science rites were conducted by Alfred McCleary Reader and cremation followed.
Concord forms a Junior Community Club for teenage youths with a program next week from 7 30 to 9 30 p m under William Shokenheid Leeman Haines and Frederick H Lovejoy as president. The group is to use vacant Store Street as its quarters.
The James J. Mansfield Post meeting led by Commander Joseph Barr discussed plans for a fall and winter campaign. Residents are urged to drop off used or discarded records at West Concord or Central Fire Stations to aid servicemen abroad. Veterans needing hospitalization or medical care should contact Service Officer Merton J. Leighton or Commander Barr, especially those discharged since enlisting.
Committal services were held Wednesday afternoon at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery for Mrs Jipele Belle Fenton who died in Lowell. She was well known in Concord and leaves relatives there.
Concord Massachusetts notices state F W Eaton retired lawyer and Concord draft board member died at his home on Simon Willard road after a long illness. He lived in Concord most of his life and retired from his Boston law office five years ago. He leaves wife Jeanie S Eaton and a brother Joan M Déton. Funeral Thursday at 4 at First Parish Unitarian with burial at Mount Auburn Cambridge.
Mr and Mrs Russell F Parsons of 60 Thoreau street observed their 27th wedding anniversary on Thursday September 2. The couple have one son Lieut Russell F Parsons stationed at a southern cantonment. They are active in local organizations and Mr Parsons works at the telephone company. Buy war bonds and stamps.
Mrs Pinolehto died suddenly at her home in Maynard after a brief illness. Medical examiner Dr. William D Roache of Marlboro ruled death a heart attack. She was 49, survived by husband John H and daughter Marian. Born in Finland, she lived in town 32 years and belonged to Finnish Congregational church. Funeral Sunday at 2 PM at the Finnish Congregational church with Rev George Kopenen officiating. Burial in Glenwood cemetery under W A Twombly service.

Concord Council Knights of Columbus held a bi monthly meeting at Monument hall on Tuesday September 7. Grand Knight Rudolph W Currier announced the council now has 36 members in the armed forces and a penny sale was planned to raise funds. The council also plans its second visit to the Red Cross Blood Plasma Center in Boston and will host servicemen again next month at the state headquarters in Boston. Installation of officers is set for September 21 with District Deputy Robert J Muldoon to install the new slate.
Aera Seonesen Jameson, 67 Ocean Avenue New York, married Pfc. Louis Bachrach son of Isaac Bachrach of Maynard. Rev. Ward J Manning officiated at the Church in Brooklyn. A small reception at the Jameson home followed. Alberta Stratton Jameson, sister of the bride, and Francis Byrne of Orange New Jersey attended. Bachrach, a Harvard classmate of Byrne, will graduate from Long Island College of Medicine in December and has four brothers in the armed forces. He plans to be a first lieutenant after internship with Sperry Gyroscope Company, Inc., where the couple will live.
Concord Mrs Zelpha Sch Lincoln was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club weekly luncheon. Presented by Leslie C. Anderson, she discussed the topic We Women Are Funny. The club’s next meeting is planned for September.
The obituary notes the death of Mrs. Lillian at her home on Hubbard Street on a Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The Trinitarian Congregational church held services led by Rev. John Wallace. She was a well known citizen and widow of Cyrus Benjamin.
The Concord Lions Club held its fourth meeting at the Old Mill with nearly 20 members and guests present. Frederick Jr president G Shermany led the session and Leon J Mor presented a report on recent activities including charity work for the Red Cross and Plasma Center in Boston.
