The article traces sugar making to ancient China under the Tsin dynasty 200 years before Christ and notes India’s claim while suggesting Indian knowledge came from China. It mentions Nearchus reporting Asiatic cane honey on the Indus, early use by Galen as medicine, slow progress, and Britain’s 18th century rise in consumption before refining arrived in 1659 via a Venetian merchant who bought the secret from the Saracens for 100,000 crowns.
