Concord Grange P H No 15Q held its annual installation of officers led by Deputy Harry Hanson at the Veterans Building. New master Mrs Jean Lord succeeds Mrs Alice OBrien. Other officers include Daniel Donahue overseer and Flora Halloran chaplain with Mary Kenney ceres Marian Blaisdell pomona and Jeannette Stensby flora among others. Middlesex Central Pomona officers to be installed October 17 at Lincoln Town Hall. Several visiting Granges attended the ceremony.
Concord residents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Garrity Sr. of Elm Street celebrate 53 years of marriage on Friday. They are parents of Attorney Thomas F. Garrity Jr., town treasurer and tax collector.
Miss Mary Arena, 1950 Concord High School graduate and current fill in secretary at Peter Bulkeley, will begin duties as receptionist at the new Concord elementary school after Virginia Olsen resignation. Mrs Godfrey will replace Arena at Peter Bulkeley.
The Rev Gunnar A Gunderson pastor of the Evangelical Free church of Concord will speak during October on the Evangelical Hour broadcast from Boston. The program airs every Sunday morning at 8 o clock and is directed by the New England Fellowship of Evangelicals as part of the Voice of the National Association of Evangelicals in this area.
Firefighters from Concord Central and West Concord stations battled a two alarm blaze at the home of ex Representative Harold Tompkins and his wife early Monday. The fire caused about 5000 dollars in damage with most flames confined to the first floor including the dining room and entryway. the couple awoke to smoke shortly after midnight.
Concord Miss Beverly A Chaffee and Barbara Hart, both Concord High School Class of 1951 graduates, enrolled as freshmen at Simmons College Boston this past week. Chaffee, daughter of Mr and Mrs Osman C G Chaffee of Old Bedford Road, active in Student Council Athletic Association school play and National Honor Society, attends Simmons with Hart, daughter of Mr and Mrs William E Hart of Old Farm Road Lincoln, who was in the dramatic club staff of The Voice and the year book.
Two men were hurt in a two car collision Sunday evening at Route 2 and Cambridge Turnpike near Crosby’s filling station and treated at Emerson hospital. Investigator Ralph Thomas reported the Lowell driver’s car rammed the rear of Hubert Durling’s vehicle.
On Sunday October 7 at 1 p m the first religious service will be televised nationwide. Bishop Henry Knox Sherrill will speak from the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York. Dr John E Large rector will assist as telecast under National Council of Churches auspices.
West Concord saw more than 200 mothers attend a two day PTA tea by the Harvey Wheeler School executive board. Pourers on Wednesday were Mrs Radcliffe Morrill and Mrs William M Johnson. On Thursday Mrs James V McMullen and Mrs Robert E Sheehan served. Mrs Earl Wheeler, the president, greeted attendees.
The Enterprise corrects a previous error naming Concord resident John H. Payne of Laws Brook Road West Concord as a Reverend. He is a private in the U S Army undergoing training at Fort Dix New Jersey. The correction absolves the prior misstatement.
Concord civil defense in cooperation with the civilian war aid division and state welfare department begins a two week house survey. Wardens will visit homes to collect data on occupancy, rooms, beds, and potential evacuee housing capability including preferences for decertomation in an emergency.
West Concord guests included Bertram Wellman representing Berkshire Laboratories who spoke on electronics and New England industry growth. The Harvey Wheeler P T A will hold its opening fall meeting next Wednesday night October 10 at 8 at the school auditorium instead of Thursday due to a holiday. Mrs Earl Wheeler will preside and refreshments will be served. Seventh and eighth grade parents are urged to attend and renew membership. Miss Virginia Biggy will discuss the new handwriting system for lower grades.
Mr and Mrs Laurence F Petersen and three children formerly of Nagog Hill road Acton have moved into the former Rollins home on Devens street Concord.
Concord post commander David B. Williams of the James J. Mansfield Post A L officiated the installation of officers of the Belmont Legion post on Tuesday night.
A special town meeting is planned at the Veterans Building on Monday October 22 with warrants expected to be posted in conspicuous places and copies sent to each voter. The meeting begins at 8 o clock.
